Night-time teeth grinding (bruxism) and heavy clenching can not only impair the quality of sleep, but can also have serious health consequences. Teeth, jaws and chewing muscles are put under great strain by the forces exerted. This can result in tooth damage, tension and chronic pain.
At the prevention-center in Zurich, we use botulinum protein very successfully against teeth grinding. In addition to its use in wrinkle treatment, botulinum protein is also a proven medical agent.
By injecting the botulinum protein into the large chewing muscle, we weaken it and achieve lasting relaxation. Nocturnal teeth grinding or clenching decreases and so does the resulting discomfort. The facial contours, which often appear hardened when teeth are ground, are also harmonized.

Frequently asked questions about botulinum protein for teeth grinding
What is bruxism?
In medical terminology, bruxism is the term used to describe night-time teeth grinding or clenching. As it is an unconscious behavior, bruxism is often only discovered late. Possible signs of teeth grinding can be tooth and jaw pain, headaches, tension or abraded tooth surfaces.
What are the reasons for teeth grinding?
There are many causes of teeth grinding. Misaligned teeth or poorly fitted dentures can lead to bruxism, as can the intake of certain medications or alcohol. Psychological factors such as stress or inner restlessness are very often the triggers for grinding. The strong tension causes those affected to grind their teeth at night or clench them hard.
What are the benefits of treatment with botulinum protein for teeth grinding?
In dentistry, teeth grinding is often treated with so-called occlusal splints or grinding splints. Although these protect the teeth from further damage, they do not change the actual problem. In contrast, when we use botulinum protein to treat teeth grinding in Zurich, the muscle activity is permanently reduced. This results in relaxation, which often leads to improved sleep quality and an overall increase in well-being.
Can damage occur with untreated bruxism?
When teeth are ground at night, extremely high forces act on the teeth and jaw. This can cause permanent damage and disrupt the function of the chewing apparatus. We therefore recommend having teeth grinding in Zurich examined and treated as soon as possible. By treating bruxism with botulinum protein, we achieve rapid relief of the symptoms – without the need for lengthy therapy.
What should I bear in mind after bruxism treatment with botulinum protein?
After treatment with botulinum protein, you should refrain from physically strenuous activities for at least 24 hours. You should also refrain from going to the sauna or solarium for 3 – 5 days. We also recommend protecting the treatment areas from direct sunlight for a few days and not massaging them.
How can the V-shape of the face be enhanced with botulinum protein?
The term V-shape describes a facial contour that has its center of gravity in the cheekbone area and becomes narrower towards the chin. This face shape is perceived as particularly aesthetic and feminine due to its harmonious proportions. While the face often naturally has a slight V-shape at a young age, the proportions can change with age or due to bruxism.
In cases of severe teeth grinding, the chewing muscles are often hardened. This makes the face in the jaw region appear hard and angular. When we inject botulinum protein against teeth grinding, we weaken the large chewing muscle (masseter). Muscle activity is reduced, the muscle relaxes and recedes. As a result, the facial features also appear softer and approach the V-shape.
How does a facial reduction with botulinum protein work?
Before the actual treatment, we invite you to a personal consultation in Zurich. Dr. Köhler will inquire about your current complaints and what is currently bothering you about the shape of your face. He will then explain to you how teeth grinding can be treated with botulinum protein. You will also be informed in detail about the possibility of aesthetic facial narrowing with botulinum protein.
The treatment itself takes place on an outpatient basis and only takes around 15 – 20 minutes. After the skin has been cleaned and disinfected, Dr. Köhler injects a low dose of botulinum protein directly into the large chewing muscle. Over the following days, the active ingredient gradually unfolds its effect. The muscle is weakened and becomes narrower without restricting the ability to chew.
Are the results of treatment with botulinum protein permanent?
The effect of injections with botulinum protein is temporary. On average, it takes around 4 – 6 months for the effect to wear off. It does not matter whether the treatment with botulinum protein was carried out for teeth grinding or for aesthetic facial narrowing.
As soon as the effect of the botulinum protein begins to wear off, we recommend a short refresher treatment in Zurich. The results of treatment with botulinum protein can be permanently maintained with regular refresher treatments.
Can botulinum protein cause side effects?
Botulinic protein is generally a very safe active ingredient that has been extensively tested and used for medical purposes for many decades. At the prevention-center in Zurich, you will be treated by Dr. med. Köhler, who has already carried out more than 50,000 botulinum protein and filler treatments. We can therefore guarantee you a high level of treatment safety in our clinic.
With correct dosage and application, there are usually only minor side effects. These include, for example, local redness, swelling, pain or bruising at the injection sites. Some customers experience other symptoms such as headaches, dry mouth or a slight feeling of sickness for a short time. As a rule, such symptoms are only mild and subside after a few days at the latest.
