One option for smoothing wrinkles is treatment with botulinic protein type A. The medical benefits of this active ingredient have been known for over twenty years for the treatment of strabismus and neurological muscle disorders.
Botulinic protein has also been used for aesthetic treatments for a number of years. It is a substance that can block the release of a messenger substance that triggers muscle contractions. Botulinic protein can also be used to treat excessive sweating (botulinic protein for hyperhidrosis). It is important to discuss the risks and side effects with your doctor.
Advantages of wrinkle treatment with botulinum protein at the prevention center
- Years of experience in treating wrinkles with botulinum protein
- Gentle & low-pain treatment thanks to the use of a fine injection needle
- In-depth consultation & planning of the wrinkle treatment
- Individually tailored treatment concepts
- Precise dosing of the medication for optimal results
Botulinic protein
Botulinic protein is a prescription-only medicine. Botulinic protein A is a naturally occurring bacterial protein. When it is injected into a muscle, it specifically blocks the nerve impulses there. As a result, the corresponding muscle can no longer be tensed as usual. Other nerve functions, such as feeling or touch through the skin, are not affected. Botulinic protein A has been used for many years to treat muscle spasms in the eye and forehead area (eyelid spasm). Approval for the treatment of wrinkles has so far been granted in Switzerland for the correction of frown lines on the forehead. Further approvals are being sought. The injection of very small amounts of botulinic protein A inhibits the corresponding muscle in the face.
Wrinkle treatment with botulinum protein
Pronounced expression lines can be corrected by surgery, by injecting filling materials or medication, such as botulinum protein A, or by a combination of the various procedures. The most suitable method depends on the location and severity of the wrinkles.
The solution with botulinic protein A is injected directly into the corresponding muscle or into the area around the corresponding muscle using a very fine needle. As the injections are made with a very fine needle, the treatment is relatively painless. In rare cases, there may be a slight burning sensation immediately after the injection.
The result of a wrinkle treatment with botulinum protein
An improvement in frown lines (glabella lines) generally occurs within a week of treatment, with the peaking effect generally seen within four weeks. The effect lasts for three to four months. The safety and efficacy of more frequent use has not yet been studied and frequent use is therefore not recommended. Should the treating physician deem it appropriate, repeat treatments may be administered if the effect of the previous injection has worn off. Repeat injections should not be given more frequently than every three months.
Botulinic protein without animal testing
We do not use any botulinum protein products that have been tested on animals. Thanks to the approval authorization granted by the manufacturer Allergan in 2013 for the world’s only and first cell-based efficacy test (CBPA test) for botulinic protein type A, animal testing is no longer necessary for the batch release of the botulinic protein we use in Switzerland. In Europe, these are therefore the only botulinum protein products available for which animal testing is no longer required for batch release.
Before wrinkle treatment with botulinum protein
Please let us know before a treatment with botulinic protein,
- if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding must not be carried out)
- if you occasionally suffer from cold sores (the injection in a corresponding area can trigger a new flare-up)
- if you have taken blood-thinning medication within the last seven days before the treatment (this increases the risk of bruising (hematoma) after the treatment)
- if you have a known nerve or muscle disorder (treatment with botulinic protein A is not possible for a few diseases)
- if you are taking antibiotics containing aminoglycosides (e.g. neomycin) – treatment would then only take place after you have finished taking the antibiotics
Botulinic protein: risks & side effects
Based on the results of controlled clinical studies, treatment-related adverse effects are to be expected for 24% of customers. Side effects may be related to the treatment, the injection technique or both.
Generally, side effects occur within the first few days after the injection and are usually temporary. Local muscle weakness is an expected pharmacological effect of botulinic protein. Blepharoptosis is related to the pharmacological effect and may be caused by the injection technique.
The following adverse reactions were observed after treatment with Vistabel:
Reactions at the injection site:
Common (1%-10%): Local pain/burning/stinging, edema and/or bruising
Nervous system
Very common (>10%): Headache (13.3%)
Frequent (1%-10%): Pain in the face, local muscle weakness
Occasional (0.1%-1%): Dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, tightness of the skin, false sensations, twitching
Eye
Frequent (1%-10%): Blepharoptosis
Occasional (0.1%-1%): Eye pain, edema (face, eyelid, periorbital), eyelid inflammation (blepharitis), visual disturbances, sensitivity to light
Skin
Frequent (1%-10%): Reddening of the skin
Occasional (0.1%-1%): Itching, dry skin
Immune system
Occasionally (0.1%-1%): Flu-like signs, general weakness, fever, infection
Psyche
Occasional (0.1%-1%): Concern
Gastrointestinal symptoms
Occasionally (0.1%-1%): Nausea
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to the active substance or one of the excipients according to the composition. General disorders of muscle activity (e.g. myasthenia gravis or Eaton-Lambert syndrome). Infection at the intended injection site(s).

Frequently asked questions about wrinkle injections with botulinum protein
For which wrinkles is a wrinkle injection with botulinum protein suitable?
Due to its effect, botulinum protein is particularly suitable for treating mimic wrinkles, i.e. wrinkles caused by excessive muscle activity. At our clinic, we use botulinum protein primarily to treat frown lines
What is botulinum protein?
Botulinic protein is a prescription drug that has been used for many years in various areas of medicine. Botulinic protein is a naturally occurring bacterial protein which, when injected into a muscle, inhibits its activity. The effect of botulinic protein has been utilized in cosmetic surgery. This is because if the muscle is weakened, it no longer shows any activity in the treated area and cannot cause any more wrinkles.
When can I do sports after a wrinkle injection with botulinum protein?
On the day of treatment, you should initially refrain from sport and strenuous physical activity. You can resume sport as usual on the following day or at the latest two days after the wrinkle injection.
When is the effect of the botulinum protein visible?
In the first few hours after the injection, the botulinum protein will still spread slightly. The treatment area may also be slightly swollen for about an hour after the treatment. The results are visible after 1 to 7 days. The movement of the muscle is then completely reduced. Over time, the botulinum protein affects the surface of the skin so that the final effect – i.e. smooth skin – is visible after around 14 days.
How long do the results of a wrinkle injection with botulinum protein last?
As a rule, the results of botulinum protein injections last around 3 to 4 months. However, the duration of effect varies from person to person and is heavily dependent on the treatment area, skin condition and other external influences.
