An aesthetic surgical tightening of the upper eyelid (upper blepharoplasty) may be indicated in particular if the upper eyelids of those affected have lost a significant amount of skin tautness, resulting in localized excess skin. Such excess skin on the upper eyelid often leads to so-called drooping eyelids – the upper eyelid is increasingly covered by skin tissue so that it is no longer recognizable to the observer.
In many cases, the altered skin elasticity on the upper eyelids is due to physical maturation processes. Influencing factors such as excessive sun exposure and long-term lack of sleep also have a negative effect on the skin structure of the eyelids.
It is not only from an aesthetic point of view that droopy upper eyelids often cause suffering for those affected – very pronounced drooping eyelids can also significantly narrow the field of vision.

Before the upper eyelid lift
Before the upper eyelid lift
Every upper eyelid lift is performed on the basis of individual findings. For this reason, the operation is preceded by a comprehensive consultation, during which the desired correction and corresponding course of treatment are discussed.
In order not to jeopardize the wound healing process after an upper eyelid correction, smokers are generally advised to refrain from nicotine consumption for approx. 14 days before the operation. As medication with a blood-thinning effect can increase the risk of bleeding during the procedure, the preoperative use of medication such as aspirin or Marcumar should also be clarified with the medical team.
The upper eyelid lift
Surgical upper eyelid correction is usually performed under local anesthesia. At the start of treatment, the surgeon first marks the skin tissue to be removed. A surgical incision is then made, which usually runs along the eyelid crease. Once the incision has healed after successful surgery, the scar is particularly inconspicuous due to its position in the eyelid crease. Once the incision has been made, excess skin tissue is removed. Depending on the findings, any muscles that would otherwise pull the eyebrows downwards are also corrected. In order to maintain the eyebrow position, the eyebrow can be attached to the periosteum during the operation – this procedure is also known as browpexy.
Once the tissue on the upper eyelid has been removed as planned, the incision edges are sutured together using fine thread material. The tightening treatment effect is now achieved.
After upper eyelid correction
Immediately after the upper eyelid lift, the eyelid is cooled. This measure prevents any swelling or bruising. Occasionally, the short-term application of inconspicuous adhesive strips is also beneficial. The sutures can usually be removed by a doctor just 4 days after the corrective surgery.
Customers are not permitted to drive a vehicle for 24 hours after the eyelid correction. Outpatients should therefore arrange to be picked up after the procedure.
In order to promote the healing process and maintain the success of the operation, customers should take it easy physically as far as possible in the first few days after the operation. In particular, strong head movements and pronounced exposure to sunlight should be avoided.
Treatment success
For most clients, an upper eyelid lift results in a significant aesthetic improvement. A few weeks after the operation, any visible consequences of the procedure (such as slight swelling) have usually subsided. The final success of the treatment can then be assessed a few months later.
Even after successful surgery, new excess skin may reappear on the upper eyelids over the following years or decades. In this case, a new corrective procedure is possible.
Risks & side effects of an upper eyelid lift
An upper eyelid lift is rarely followed by pain, but swelling or bruising often lasts several days to several weeks. Occasionally, feelings of tension occur after eyelid correction. Although eye injuries are very rare during upper eyelid correction, they cannot be completely ruled out. Last but not least, wound healing disorders, infections, functional impairments or allergic reactions are also among the possible consequences of an upper eyelid lift.

Frequently asked questions about upper eyelid lifting
Who is suitable for an upper eyelid lift?
An upper eyelid lift is a suitable operation for clients who suffer from pronounced drooping eyelids and would like to have them removed.
When will I be socially acceptable again after an upper eyelid lift?
After the upper eyelid lift, the treatment area may be slightly swollen or reddened. These side effects usually subside within a few days, so that you will be able to socialize again after about a week.
When can I wear make-up again after an upper eyelid lift?
One week after the operation, the wound edges will have healed sufficiently for you to carefully apply make-up again. Make sure that you do not apply make-up against the scar, but along the course of the scar if possible.
When will the final result of upper eyelid correction be visible?
The first results are visible immediately after the upper eyelid lift. The full treatment result is possible approximately one week after the upper eyelid correction, once the swelling and redness have subsided.
Can the costs of an upper eyelid lift be covered by health insurance?
If the drooping eyelids are so pronounced that they are already impairing the patient’s field of vision, it is possible that the health insurance company will cover the costs of the operation. We will be happy to discuss with you in person at our clinic in Zurich whether the costs can be covered in your case!
