Every breast is unique. However, if they do not conform to the usual norm, this can be very stressful for the women affected. One of the most common malformations is the so-called tubular breast, which is also known as a “trunk breast” or “tube breast” due to its special shape. It is often perceived by those affected as an unsightly blemish, which can sometimes cause a great deal of suffering and have a negative impact on self-confidence, relationships and sexuality. But this does not have to be the case. There are various methods to surgically alter the deformity and thus significantly improve the quality of life of the women affected. At the prevention center in Zurich, Dr. Köhler will inform and advise you about the various options for reshaping tubular breasts and helping you to achieve round, feminine breasts. Frequently asked questions about the treatment of a tubular breast
What is a tubular breast and when should it be treated?
A tubular breast is a genetic malformation of the breast. It consists of the lower half of the breast not growing to the same extent as the upper half of the breast due to incorrectly structured mammary gland tissue. As a result, the nipple area visually falls forward, creating a tubular shape. Although this deformity does not cause any physical discomfort, it can be perceived as so unaesthetic by the women affected that they suffer psychologically as a result. At the latest when the deformity severely restricts their private life, partnership or sexuality, surgical modification should be considered.
Is a tubular breast dangerous?
No, this is a congenital breast deformity that is usually corrected for purely aesthetic reasons. Further medical treatment is not necessary.
What are the treatment options for tubular breasts?
As tubular breasts are genetic, they can only be changed surgically. However, there are various options available for this, which are selected depending on the type and severity of the deformity. In most cases, this involves reconstructive measures in combination with breast augmentation. Sometimes an adjustment of asymmetries or a unilateral breast reduction may also be necessary to achieve the desired result.
How does breast augmentation for tubular breasts work?
Before every breast augmentation, you will have a detailed personal consultation with Dr. Köhler at the prevention center in Zurich. The consultation will focus on your wishes for a newly shaped breast and the possibilities of realizing them. After a thorough preliminary examination, Dr. Köhler will draw up an individual treatment plan for the optimal procedure for you.
The operation itself is performed under general anesthesia and is minimally invasive and scar-sparing. The structure of the breast tissue is rearranged using special incisions and the breast is tightened if necessary. The selected implants are then inserted to give the breast a new shape and size. If there is breast asymmetry, this can be corrected by adjusting the shape. A one-sided breast reduction is also possible if desired.
In order to monitor the results of the operation and wound healing, we carry out check-ups at our prevention center in Zurich after discharge.
How long does breast augmentation take?
The duration of the procedure depends on the amount of treatment required, which is determined by the initial situation and the desired result. Depending on the case, the operation can take between 1 and 3 hours.
What needs to be considered after breast augmentation?
Allow yourself some rest and make sure that you do not put too much strain on your upper body during the initial period. In the first 4-6 weeks after the operation, you should wear a special compression bra to stabilize the breast and support the results of the operation and healing. We advise our clients at the prevention-center in Zurich to avoid sport and other physically strenuous activities for the first 6-8 weeks after the operation. Please also avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat for about 3 months – not only outside, but also in the sauna or solarium.
Does breast augmentation permanently eliminate tubular breasts?
Yes, because the breast is given a completely new shape by restructuring the breast tissue and inserting implants. A return to the original tubular shape is not possible. However, age- and weight-related changes to the breast cannot be ruled out, as they also occur in every natural breast.
Is breast augmentation painful?
At the prevention-center in Zurich, the operation is performed under general anesthesia so that you will not notice the procedure. Wound pain may occur immediately after the operation, which can be treated with a conventional painkiller until healing is complete.
Can tubular breasts recur after breast augmentation?
No, because the procedure permanently changes the structure of the breast tissue. It is no longer possible for a tubular breast to reappear. However, as with any breast, the shape of the breast may change due to weight changes or ageing.
What are the risks of breast augmentation?
Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation is also associated with certain general surgical risks. There is always a risk of wound healing disorders or infections, but these can be minimized by adhering to the highest medical standards, as is the case at the prevention-center in Zurich. The same applies to the risk of implant damage or capsular fibrosis, which can also be reduced by an experienced surgeon.
