Russian lips (also known as doll lips) are particularly popular. This minimally invasive technique emphasizes the lip contour using small amounts of hyaluronic filler. As a result, the lips appear slightly heart-shaped, more like a kissable mouth and therefore look more natural than a conventional lip injection. At our prevention center in Zurich, Dr. Köhler has been performing the Russian lips method for more than 10 years with great success, as this treatment not only allows us to optimize the lip contour and achieve a natural result. Who are Russian Lips suitable for?
Russian Lips are suitable for anyone who wants fuller, gently curved lips without the optimization being visible. This method is particularly suitable for people who have not yet had lip injections. However, women and men who already have experience with lip augmentation can also benefit from the new procedure – provided there is no residue from previous fillers.
How do Russian Lips differ from conventional lip injections?
Russian lips are an optimization of conventional lip injections. This technique gives you full and gently curved, but very natural-looking lips. While the conventional method primarily increases the volume of the lips, Russian Lips is all about perfecting the lip contour. By injecting tiny amounts of hyaluronic acid vertically, the center of the upper lip appears slightly higher, making the lips look more heart-shaped and therefore fuller.
What are the benefits of a Russian Lips treatment in Zurich?
As the volume of the lips changes only slightly during the Russian Lips treatment, the facial profile also remains largely the same. This means that the lips still appear flat – even when viewed from the side – and do not protrude unnaturally as with the so-called “inflatable boat lips”. Differences in the volume of the upper and lower lip can be evened out and vertical injections have another advantage: vertical wrinkles around the upper lip can also be smoothed out.
Can Russian Lips still be achieved after conventional lip injections?
This is theoretically possible. However, all previous fillers must have already been broken down by the body before a Russian Lips treatment can take place. At least two weeks should pass between the dissolution of the previous fillers and the Russian Lips treatment.
What are the risks associated with Russian Lips?
The Russian Lips technique requires experience and sensitivity – both in terms of dosage and targeted injections. At our prevention center in Zurich, we have both and can achieve very good results with this treatment method. The Russian Lips method is considered a very low-risk procedure. If carried out professionally, no side effects are to be expected. In individual cases, there may be slight swelling and redness in the treated areas. This can be alleviated by cooling, but also disappears by itself after a short time.
Procedure of a Russian Lips treatment
How does a Russian Lips treatment work?
After a detailed personal consultation, Dr. Köhler performs the Russian Lips treatment on an outpatient basis at the prevention center in Zurich. The first injection is given into the base of the lips and the filler (hyaluronic acid) is distributed from there to the edge of the lips. Unlike conventional lip augmentation, the treatment is therefore carried out from the inside outwards.
The treatment takes about 20-30 minutes and does not require a longer stay. You can leave the clinic immediately after the treatment and go about your normal daily business.
What should I bear in mind before and after the Russian Lips treatment in Zurich?
If you have already had lip injections, you should make sure that the next (Russian Lips) treatment is only possible after the previous filler has completely dissolved. As the treated areas may be slightly swollen and reddened immediately after the injection, you should cool them well (NEVER apply ice directly to the skin). Take it easy on the day of treatment and the following day and avoid direct sunlight and physically strenuous activities such as sport.
How many sessions are required for Russian Lips?
This depends on the initial state and the desired target state. As a rule, a single session is sufficient; for people with very thin lips, it may be advisable to repeat the treatment after a few weeks.
Is a Russian Lips treatment painful?
The Russian Lips treatment is a very painless procedure. The injections are barely noticeable thanks to the use of very fine needles. If desired, we can apply an anesthetic cream to the relevant areas before the treatment. However, most hyaluronic fillers already contain a low-dose anesthetic, so you don’t need to be afraid of the injections.

How long does the effect of Russian Lips last?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural material that the body breaks down over time. As a result, the effect of hyaluronic acid as a filler is lost and the effect achieved with Russian Lips disappears. As the body’s own degradation of hyaluronic acid occurs at different rates or slowly, the duration of the effect can also vary. In our experience, the effect of Russian Lips lasts around 6-8 months for most patients. For a lasting beautiful result, we recommend regular repetition with an annual refresher treatment at our clinic in Zurich.
