When should breast implants be removed?

Nowadays, breast implants are often removed for aesthetic reasons. In principle, modern implants of the latest generation no longer require early replacement. The implants are designed to be worn for up to 50 years. They should only be removed if they are damaged or if health problems occur or, statistically speaking, after 10 to 15 years. If you have no problems, implants can be left in for longer.

One possible reason for removal is capsular fibrosis. This is a complication of breast implants that used to occur relatively frequently, but has now become less common thanks to modern implants. Capsular fibrosis is a defense reaction of the body against the foreign body implant. A capsule of scar-like connective tissue forms around the implant. In the worst case, this can lead to deformation and hardening of the breast.

Implants may also have to be removed if the breast is diseased or the implant site is inflamed. The same applies to ruptured or otherwise damaged implants. Particularly in the case of older generation breast implants, a quick replacement is usually essential as the filling can leak into the breast.

How does breast implant removal work in Zurich?

Before the implant removal in Zurich, Dr. Köhler will discuss with you the reasons why you wish to have the implant removed and which procedure makes sense in your case. You will be informed in detail about all risks and post-operative care. The operation itself usually takes place under twilight sedation and can take several hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure.

To remove the implants, Dr. Köhler uses the same access route that was used to insert the implants wherever possible. This has the advantage that no new scars are created. The implants are removed as intact as possible and in one Zug. Dr. Köhler then sutures the surgical wounds with self-dissolving suture material.

What needs to be considered after breast implant removal?

After the breast implants have been removed in Zurich, you will be given a compression bra, just as after the breast augmentation. You should wear this permanently for the following weeks and refrain from any physical exertion. However, light activities can be resumed after a few days.

It may take 1 – 2 weeks before you are fully able to work and socialize again. Sports activities are possible again after about 6 weeks. You should continue to protect the breast from direct sunlight for about six months afterwards to avoid unsightly scarring.

How much does breast implant removal cost?

At our prevention center in Zurich, we offer implant removal from CHF 4,900. The exact costs may vary depending on the initial findings. If there is a medical indication, the costs may also be covered by health insurance.

Frequently asked questions about breast implant removal

When do breast implants have to be removed?

In individual cases, it may be necessary to remove the implants for medical reasons. Examples of medical indications include inflammation of the implant site, capsular fibrosis or breast diseases. Removal is also necessary if the implant is damaged.

In principle, newer breast implants can remain in the body for many years to decades as long as no problems occur. Older generation implants should be checked regularly to rule out damage.

Do new scars occur when breast implants are removed?

Implants are removed via an incision in the underbust crease. If possible, Dr. Köhler uses the same incision through which the implants were inserted. This means you will not have any new scars.

If a breast lift is also desired, scarring cannot be completely avoided. Here, too, we at the prevention center in Zurich always strive for a scar-saving incision.

What should be considered after breast implant removal in Zurich?

Aftercare after implant removal is similar to that after breast augmentation. You will be given a compression bra for the first few weeks, which should be worn day and night. During this time, physical strain and sudden movements should be avoided. You can resume light activities after a few days.

After the implant removal, you should allow for a professional and social downtime of 1 – 2 weeks. You can carefully start exercising again after 6 weeks. To ensure scar-free healing, we recommend that you protect the breast from direct UV radiation for the first six months.

Can the breasts be tightened at the same time as the operation?

Yes, a combined procedure is possible and makes sense in many cases. The tissue can become significantly slack, especially after a long period of wearing larger implants. In this case, the tissue is tightened and any excess skin is removed during the same procedure. If necessary, Dr. Köhler will also lift the nipples to achieve an overall aesthetic appearance.

What risks can be associated with implant removal?

The removal of implants is associated with the same anesthetic and surgical risks as breast augmentation. Possible complications include infections, post-operative bleeding, swelling and wound healing disorders.

Furthermore, there may be temporary sensory disturbances of the nipple. In very rare cases, the loss of sensation may be permanent.

At our clinic in Zurich, we work according to strict hygiene standards to guarantee you the highest level of safety. You can also reduce the risk of complications to a minimum through conscientious aftercare. If problems do occur, we are always available for you in Zurich.

Is it painful to remove breast implants?

The operation itself usually takes place in twilight sleep and is completely painless for you. No severe discomfort is to be expected after the procedure either. In the event that slight soreness occurs, we will of course prescribe you a suitable painkiller.

How much does a breast implant removal in Zurich cost?

The costs for the removal of implants in Zurich can vary greatly from person to person. In general, you can expect to pay around CHF 4,900. If the removal is more complex or a breast lift is also desired, the costs will be correspondingly higher. You will receive an exact cost estimate from us during the consultation.
