Pigment spots are generally harmless, but some people find them annoying, especially if they are so-called age spots. They are a visible sign of natural skin ageing and can significantly change the overall appearance of the skin or person. To prevent this and permanently remove age spots and other pigmentation marks, we offer modern laser treatment with the high-tech PicoPlus laser at our prevention center in Zurich. The laser blasts the pigments into tiny particles, which are excreted via the lymphatic system. The difference is visible immediately after the treatment and often just 1-2 sessions are enough to completely and permanently remove age spots.

Frequently asked questions about pigment spot removal

Who is pigment spot removal suitable for?

The targeted removal of pigment spots is suitable for anyone who is bothered by them and wants them to be removed gently.

The prerequisite for laser therapy is that the troublesome spots are simple pigment changes. They must therefore be carefully examined in advance to rule out malignant skin changes. Laser treatment can only be carried out if the skin is healthy and there are no infections. It should also not be tanned, as this could lead to the formation of new spots.

Why do pigment spots appear on the skin?

Pigment spots (technical term: hyperpigmentation) are dark skin discolorations caused by an increased storage of the pigment melanin. This pigment is produced by the body and serves as protection against UV radiation – which is why the skin turns brown after extensive sunbathing. However, this also increases the risk of individual age and pigment spots.

How does the removal of pigment spots work?

Once you have decided to undergo laser treatment at our prevention center in Zurich after a detailed consultation, the first step is a thorough preliminary examination of the respective skin areas. If there are no reasons against laser therapy, the treatment can begin. It is not necessary to anesthetize the areas of skin to be treated.

The laser device emits short, high-energy laser pulses into the skin. These burst the pigment deposits into tiny particles. The first changes are visible immediately after the treatment. The tiny pigment particles are removed via the lymphatic system within the next few days and excreted from the body.

What results can be expected after removing pigment spots?

With the PicoPlus laser, very good results can be achieved in the removal of pigment spots. In most cases, we can completely remove the unwanted pigment spots in 1-2 sessions with this treatment. However, how well the skin responds to the treatment depends on various factors. On the one hand, the effect is genetically determined, but on the other hand it is also influenced by your lifestyle (e.g. strong sun exposure). For this reason, several sessions are sometimes necessary and sometimes, even after successful removal, age spots reappear after some time and need to be removed again.

What do I need to consider before removing pigment spots?

Removing the pigment spots makes the skin more sensitive to light. This can result in undesirable side effects, such as renewed hyperpigmentation. You can reduce this risk by ensuring that your skin is not pre-tanned when you have laser therapy. If possible, we therefore recommend treatment in the winter months.

You should also pay attention to other things that could cause your skin to become more sensitive to light. These include certain cosmetic products, dietary supplements or medicines. Please let us know at an early stage whether and if so, which medication you take regularly or occasionally and which cosmetic products you use.

How many sessions are necessary for the complete removal of pigment spots?

This depends above all on the extent of the pigment spots and how your skin type responds to the laser treatment. Experience has shown that 1-2 sessions are sufficient in most cases. Sometimes, however, it takes 3-4 sessions to achieve the desired result and completely remove the pigment spots.

Is the removal of pigment spots painful?

No, the PicoPlus laser belongs to the new generation of laser devices, which are characterized, among other things, by a significantly gentler treatment. Removing pigment spots with the high-tech PicoPlus laser is not painful – no pain is to be expected either during the treatment or afterwards. You will only feel the skin heat up and experience a slight tingling sensation. There is also no downtime that would be required for physical rest or regeneration.

What are the risks of removing pigment spots?

The laser is applied very precisely to the pigment spots to be removed. The surrounding tissue is not affected. The treated skin may initially be reddened and minor bleeding (similar to an abrasion) or swelling may occur. These usually subside within the next few days.

The skin is often very sensitive after treatment and should therefore be protected from direct sunlight. In rare cases, temporary changes in skin pigmentation may occur, which may appear as lighter or darker patches but will even out over time. To prevent the formation of blisters or crusts and to optimally support the healing process, please follow our instructions for aftercare and skin care.

How much does the removal of pigment spots cost?

We offer laser therapy in our prevention center from CHF 450 per session, but the cost of removing pigment spots depends on the treatment area and the treatment area. They can therefore vary from person to person. After a detailed consultation and the necessary preliminary examination, we will of course provide you with an individual quote for your personal treatment to remove pigment spots at our clinic in Zurich.
