The shape and contour of the chin contributes significantly to the appearance of the face. Clearly defined chin contours that separate the face from the neck are considered particularly attractive. However, small pockets of fat on the chin (“double chin”) blur these contours, significantly changing the facial features both from the front and the sides. These undesirable changes can be reversed with a double chin treatment. Depending on the extent of the double chin, various procedures are available for this type of correction or optimization.

Get rid of a double chin with EMFACE®
Some people find age-related changes to the chin particularly annoying. In addition to classic wrinkle treatment with EMFACE®, we also offer a special treatment for double chins at our clinic in Zurich. We use an applicator that has been specially developed for the chin region. Within just 20 minutes, we achieve a significant tightening of the sagging tissue.
A double chin can be caused by three factors: age-related sagging skin, stored fatty tissue and sagging muscles. Many conventional methods only aim to reduce fat deposits. What is a double chin?
Small fat pads under the chin are referred to as a double chin. They look like a second chin – hence the name.
Who is affected: How does a double chin develop?
A double chin can have various causes. It often occurs in people who are overweight. The risk also increases with age, as excess fat deposits are harder to break down and the elasticity of the skin decreases. There is also a genetic predisposition that causes even younger people to develop a double chin, even though they are of normal weight.
Can a double chin be prevented?
There are risk factors that favor a double chin. These include, first and foremost, body weight. Excess weight shows up in various places and often also on the face in the form of a double chin. By watching your weight, you can significantly reduce the risk of a double chin. You can also positively influence the typical signs of ageing skin through a healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise) and good skin care. As a rule, these can only be slowed down or reduced, but not stopped completely.
Can a double chin be removed without treatment?
This depends on the cause of the double chin: If it has developed as a result of weight gain, it usually disappears again by losing weight. However, if there is a genetic predisposition, so that the double chin persists even at a normal weight, treatment (e.g. liposuction and/or tightening) is usually the only way to get rid of the unwanted fat pads permanently.
Procedure of the double chin treatment
Various methods are available for the treatment of a double chin: Injections with hyaluronic acid, injection lipolysis, liposuction and neck lift. Which method is most suitable in each individual case depends on the cause and severity of the double chin. The course of treatment varies depending on the method:
Injections with hyaluronic acid
Targeted injections with hyaluronic acid are ideal for treating a slight double chin. With this minimally invasive method, the chin line can be contoured more clearly and small irregularities and asymmetries can be evened out.
Injection lipolysis
Injection lipolysis (“fat-away injection”) uses special active ingredients that are injected directly into the fat deposits on the chin to dissolve them. This method is considered a gentle alternative to surgical liposuction, but is only suitable for treating smaller fat deposits.
Liposuction
Traditional liposuction is usually required to treat larger fat deposits. Here, the fat cells loosened by an injected active ingredient are sucked out via a cannula. This treatment is carried out under local or general anesthesia.
Neck lift
In the case of a very pronounced double chin, excess skin remains after liposuction. To remove it and ensure an aesthetic result, a neck lift is required. During this procedure, which is performed under general anesthesia, the skin (and possibly more fatty tissue) is surgically removed.
What are the risks of a double chin treatment?
Minimally invasive treatments such as hyaluronic acid injections are very gentle procedures as they do not involve any surgical or anesthetic risks. However, the results achieved are not permanent. For permanent results, surgical procedures such as injection lipolysis, liposuction or neck lift are more suitable. As with any operation, these procedures may result in post-operative bleeding, wound healing disorders/infections or sensitivity disorders.
Irrespective of this, slight swelling or redness or minor bruising or temporary numbness may occur in the treatment area after a double chin treatment. However, these usually subside completely within a few days.
What should be considered after the treatment of a double chin?
It is generally advisable to reduce any swelling in the treatment area by carefully cooling the chin. Allow yourself to rest after the treatment and avoid sport and other physically strenuous activities as well as direct sunlight, sauna and solarium visits for the first few days. Follow the respective aftercare recommendations that you receive at our prevention center in Zurich (e.g. chin bandage or compression mask). Are the results of a double chin treatment permanent?
How long the results of the treatment last depends on the procedure used. The effect achieved with hyaluronic acid injections diminishes over time as the body breaks down the injected hyaluronic acid. However, it can be maintained over a longer period of time through regular refreshing at our prevention center in Zurich.
The results of injection lipolysis, liposuction and neck lifts are usually permanent. However, even these treatments do not stop the natural ageing process, so the skin and chin can change over time. Of course, it is then possible to have a new correction performed at our prevention center in Zurich.
