Lipoedema is a fat distribution disorder that occurs almost exclusively in women and is characterized by increasingly large fat deposits in the lower half of the body. These mainly appear on the upper and lower legs, hips and inner sides of the knee joints, and later also on the upper arms. Without treatment, the disease progresses inexorably and with it the suffering of those affected increases. In addition to the pain and other physical complaints associated with lipoedema, those affected suffer greatly from the visual changes.

Compression garments and manual lymphatic drainage are often recommended as treatment, but these procedures can only alleviate the symptoms in the short term and must be carried out for a lifetime to achieve the desired effect.

A permanent alternative is liposuction, which we often perform on lipedema patients at our prevention center in Zurich. It not only alleviates the symptoms in the long term, but also changes the visual appearance – for a better quality of life and life satisfaction.

Frequently asked questions about lipedema treatment

What is lipedema?

Lipoedema is a fat distribution disorder that can occur mainly on the thighs and lower legs, on the inside of the knee joints, in the hip area and on the upper arms. The disorder is progressive and goes through various stages: initially it appears as a fine-knotted skin surface (cellulite), later the skin becomes coarse-knotted and develops clearly visible dimples, until finally large deforming skin flaps characterize the third stage.

How do I know if I have lipedema?

Typical symptoms of lipoedema are a hardening of the subcutaneous fatty tissue and orange peel skin or cellulite as well as a feeling of heaviness in the affected regions. These are also characterized by a pronounced sensitivity to touch and pressure pain as well as a tendency to hematomas (bruises). The legs tend to swell, especially when sitting or standing. If you also have these complaints, please have them checked by a doctor. Make an appointment for a detailed diagnosis so that you can start the appropriate treatment.

How can lipedema be treated?

Lipoedema is usually initially treated conservatively. This includes regular manual lymphatic drainage in combination with compression garments. However, if conservative treatment does not lead to the desired success or a permanently effective alternative is sought, there is no other option than suctioning out the excess fat cells (liposuction). Although this treatment cannot cure the disease itself, it can significantly reduce the pain and other symptoms and thus noticeably improve the quality of life.

How does lipedema treatment work?

Before the actual treatment, we carry out a comprehensive preliminary examination and a detailed personal consultation at our prevention center in Zurich. Depending on the results of the examination, we will draw up a treatment plan with the best method for you. In a consultation, we will discuss the possibilities and advantages of this method and inform you about the procedure and the risks of the treatment.

On the day of the operation, the affected areas are anesthetized with an injection that loosens the fatty tissue so that it can be removed more easily. This is then systematically suctioned out using very fine cannulas. Depending on the initial condition, several liters of fat are removed in this way.

After liposuction, you should remain in our prevention center in Zurich for a few hours for observation. You should then take a few days off and recover from the procedure. After about 2 days you can usually resume light activities, but you should refrain from physically strenuous activities such as sport for 1-2 weeks. Please also follow the other aftercare recommendations and be sure to attend the agreed check-up appointment at the prevention center in Zurich.

What should be considered after lipedema treatment?

Allow yourself and your body a few days to recover after liposuction. To support the healing process, it is important that you wear the recommended compression garments (approx. 6-8 weeks) and avoid physically strenuous activities for the first 3-4 weeks.

When will I be socially acceptable and able to do sports again after the operation?

This depends on the extent of the treatment. Most clients are fit for social life again after 5-7 days. However, sport and other physically strenuous activities should not be included in the daily schedule for at least 1-2 weeks.

Can lipedema recur after surgery?

Although liposuction permanently removes the fat cells, not all affected fat cells can be removed without leaving any residue. The operation also does not eliminate the cause of the fat distribution disorder. It is therefore theoretically possible for fat tissue to increase again after liposuction. However, this is very rare and takes several years. In these cases, repeat liposuction is possible. Larger areas often require 2 to 3 operations, which are performed in stages.

Is liposuction associated with risks?

Like all surgical procedures, liposuction is also associated with certain risks. Swelling and bruising may occur in the operated areas after the procedure, but these usually subside on their own within a few days. However, the risk of swelling and other possible side effects is minimized by consistently wearing the recommended compression garments. In very rare cases, wound healing disorders, bumps, excess skin or infections or thrombosis may occur. Therefore, please follow the aftercare instructions very carefully and be sure to attend the follow-up appointments at our prevention center in Zurich.

How much does lipoedema liposuction cost?

This cannot be said in general terms, as lipoedema varies greatly from customer to customer and liposuction is therefore more or less complex. After a thorough preliminary examination and a personal consultation at our prevention center in Zurich, we will be happy to provide you with an individual offer for liposuction.
