Enlargement of the labia after significant weight changes or pregnancies, or simply one’s own aesthetic sensibilities, can lead to a desire for correction or reduction of the labia. However, labia that are too large or too long can also interfere with sports (e.g. cycling, horse riding) or wearing tight pants.
Another reason for wanting surgery in the genital area is the functional impairment during sexual intercourse. The invagination of labia that are too large can cause severe pain. In addition, if a woman has difficulty reaching orgasm, a reduction in size by partially or completely removing the clitoris can improve stimulation and increase the woman’s ability to reach orgasm.
However, the opposite can also be the case: for example, underdeveloped or sagging labia minora can be a reason for dissatisfaction with one’s own intimate area. If the labia minora do not completely cover the labia minora, this can be perceived as unaesthetic on the one hand, but on the other hand they can no longer fulfill their actual function of protecting the labia minora, the vaginal entrance and the urethral opening. The labia can be enlarged using the body’s own fatty tissue by filling the labia. To do this, excess fatty tissue is removed from areas of the body such as the buttocks or thighs.

Before labiaplasty
The first point must always be an individual consultation and a detailed informative discussion – this takes place either at our premises in Zurich. If you have decided to have the procedure, you must observe the following rules beforehand:
Smokers should refrain from smoking for several weeks before and after the operation, as otherwise wound healing will be impaired. Medication such as Aspirin® or Marcumar®, which inhibit blood clotting, may need to be discontinued in consultation with your doctor. Ideally, you should be completely shaved in the genital area to minimize the risk of infection.
Labia reduction
In a labia minora reduction, excess skin or mucous membrane is removed from the labia minora and the incision edges are closed with fine, self-dissolving sutures. It is important to have precise knowledge of the incision, which must be chosen individually in each case in order to achieve a perfect result. The operation is ideally performed in a short, gentle twilight sleep. Treatment under local anesthesia is possible, but rather unpleasant and not recommended by us. Generally speaking, labiaplasty is uncomplicated and relatively low-risk for an experienced surgeon. The operation takes around 30 to 60 minutes.
Labia augmentation
In labia augmentation, the labia minora are filled with autologous fat to increase their volume. Body fat is taken from areas such as the abdomen, buttocks or thighs, processed and then inserted into the labia minora through tiny incisions in the skin to achieve the desired appearance. The treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that takes one to one and a half hours in total and for which a local anaesthetic is sufficient. The surgeon needs a great deal of sensitivity and experience to achieve a harmonious result without impairing the functionality and sensitivity of the labia minora.
A combination with other procedures is possible, e.g. injection of the mons veneris or, conversely, liposuction.

and contouring. Ask your doctor about the possibilities.
Labia reduction/enlargement at the prevention-center Zurich
Labiaplasty is performed in our operating rooms in the Utoschloss Zurich. The consultation before the procedure takes place either on the premises of the prevention-center Zurich.
After labiaplasty
After the labia reduction and a subsequent rest period of 1-2 hours, you can go home again. You should be picked up after an outpatient procedure. You will also be given a wound ointment and antibiotics for 5 days as prophylaxis. After a few days, the slight initial pain will have disappeared and the post-operative swelling will have almost completely subsided. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for the first four weeks, and sports such as horse riding, cycling or jogging and visits to the sauna should also be avoided during this period so as not to put too much strain on the still unstable wounds.
After labia augmentation, you should rest for a few hours and cool the genital area to avoid swelling. Slight pain or burning will usually subside the day after the treatment. You can hardly expect any disruption to your everyday life, as slight bruising and swelling will subside on their own within a few days or weeks. However, you should avoid sexual intercourse and sports such as horse riding or jogging that could irritate the treated area for the first six weeks after the procedure.
Success of labiaplasty
In most cases, success is achieved in that the aesthetics are greatly improved. After around three weeks, the consequences of the procedure are usually no longer particularly noticeable, but ultimately it is only possible to make a statement about the definitive success after several months. The result is not always as desired, which is why it is important to have a detailed discussion with the doctor beforehand.
Labiaplasty: risks & side effects
Labiaplasty often results in bruising and swelling, but rarely severe pain. These symptoms almost always disappear within days to weeks. Sometimes bleeding and secondary bleeding can also occur under the skin, so that further surgery may be necessary to stop or remove the blood. A feeling of tightness can sometimes remain. Infections and inflammation, wound healing disorders, excessive scarring and nerve damage with numbness can also occur.
Functional or cosmetic impairments cannot be prevented in every case. Allergic reactions of varying degrees of severity can also occur. As a rule, complete healing occurs after about 4 weeks. Asymmetry may result after the swelling has subsided, but is usually neither disturbing nor noticeable.
Only in rare cases does labia augmentation lead to complications such as inflammation. As with any aesthetic procedure, the result may be aesthetically unsatisfactory, making a follow-up correction necessary. As a rule, no scars are visible after the treatment.

Frequently asked questions about labiaplasty
General information on labiaplasty
Who is a labiaplasty suitable for?
Labiaplasty is suitable for women who are bothered by labia that are either too small or too large. An enlarged labia can not only lead to psychological discomfort and make it difficult for a woman to feel comfortable in her body. Large labia can also cause physical problems. For example, they can interfere with sporting activities such as cycling, affect the woman during sexual intercourse or get in the way when wearing tight pants.
If the labia minora are too small, this can also be perceived as unaesthetic. But too small labia minora can also no longer fulfill their function of protecting the labia minora from external influences and bacteria.
What are the advantages of labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty at our clinic has the advantage that we work very precisely and have many years of experience with this treatment. This allows us to respond professionally and sensitively to our clients’ wishes and create an overall aesthetic appearance. Overall, women feel much more comfortable in their bodies after the treatment and feel much better in their everyday lives as well as in their sex lives.
Does labiaplasty leave scars?
For both labia reduction and labia augmentation, Dr. Köhler takes care to make very fine incisions and then close them again as precisely as possible with fine sutures. The minimal skin incisions are usually made on the outer labia, but are no longer visible after the healing phase.
What are the risks of labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty involves the classic surgical risks. In individual cases, post-operative bleeding or wound dehiscence may also occur. The sensation in the treated area can change, which is why it is all the more important not to remove too much skin, as this can also lead to dryness in the vaginal tract. If the incision is not made correctly, a scar cord can form, which leads to a narrowing of the vagina.
Procedure for labiaplasty
What do I need to consider during a labiaplasty?
Before undergoing labiaplasty, it is important to know that this is an area with a very good blood supply, which is why it is particularly important to stop bleeding during the treatment. After the treatment, customers must make sure that they receive very good aftercare, i.e. the treatment area should be showered daily for a week and antibiotics should be taken.
What types of labiaplasty are there?
Which form of labiaplasty is suitable for the client depends on what bothers her and what we can functionally improve in our clinic. Labia that are too prominent often interfere with sex or sport, which is why many women opt for a labia reduction. There are three techniques for shortening the labia. On the one hand, the so-called wedge incision can be used, which we do not use in our clinic, as this technique often leads to wound healing problems. An incision can also be made in the middle, where the same skin color can be retained at the incision site. The technique we use in our clinic is to make an incision at the transition from the normal skin to the mucous membrane and shorten the skin around the clitoris. This allows us to achieve a lifting effect. This treatment can also be combined with an autologous fat injection so that the labia minora are covered by the outer labia due to the volume compensation.
How does labiaplasty work?
Labiaplasty is performed in our clinic under light sedation. After we have marked the excess skin, the client is given a local anesthetic to reduce blood flow and pain. While the client is asleep, we remove the excess skin, ensure comprehensive hemostasis and then suture the treatment area with self-dissolving stitches. The client spends a total of one hour in the operating room and around two hours in our clinic.
Is labiaplasty painful?
As the labia is a very sensitive area, there may be a temporary feeling of discomfort after the treatment, which the client will notice especially when sitting. We recommend that our clients mainly stand, sit on a soft cushion and counteract any pain with common pain medication.
Aftercare of a labiaplasty
What do you have to consider after a labiaplasty?
After labiaplasty, it is important that you shower the treatment area with a little water after every visit to the toilet for the first few days. Contact with soap should be avoided for the first seven days. You should also initially sit on a soft cushion and not walk around too much. During the first four weeks, you should refrain from sport and sexual intercourse.
When can I do sports again after labiaplasty?
For the first four weeks after labiaplasty, you should take care to avoid activities that put strain on the labia and therefore interfere with wound healing. In addition to sexual intercourse, this also includes sports such as cycling, horse riding or jogging.
In order to avoid putting unnecessary strain on the still unstable wounds after labiaplasty, you should refrain from the above-mentioned activities for 6 weeks.
When can I return to work after a labiaplasty?
The patient is usually fit for work again after one week.
How long do the results of a labiaplasty last?
The results of a labia reduction are usually permanent, as once the skin and fatty tissue have been removed, they do not reappear.
In the case of labia augmentation with autologous fat, it must first be considered how much of the patient’s own fat will ultimately grow into the tissue. After the procedure, a certain amount of autologous fat is broken down. It is therefore only possible to make a final statement about the result after a few months – but this is usually permanent.
