Heavy sweating (hyperhidrosis) can have a very negative impact on those affected. Excessive sweating often restricts social contacts in both private and professional life. In addition to the surgical procedure of sweat gland suction, the treatment of hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin has become established in recent years. This gentle alternative to suction curettage reliably helps against heavy sweating and ensures that those affected can approach other people with confidence again. If deodorants and other remedies do not achieve any improvement, botulinum toxin treatment is the first step towards a life without annoying sweating.

Advantages of hyperhidrosis treatment at the prevention center

  • Many years of experience in the treatment of hyperhidrosis
  • Detailed consultation & planning of the injection
  • Minimally invasive & gentle treatment method
  • Alternative to surgical sweat gland removal
  • Highest quality and hygiene standards

Botulinum toxin against sweating

The active ingredient botulinum toxin (wrinkle treatment with botulinum toxin), which is primarily used to treat wrinkles, can also be used to combat heavy sweating. Botulinum toxin injections are administered to the areas of the body affected by excessive sweating, such as the armpits, hands, feet and possibly also the chest. The sweat glands are precisely localized beforehand. The minimal dose of the active ingredient botulinum toxin is sufficient to stop the sweat production of the sweat glands. Botulinum toxin prevents the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which stimulates sweat production, from reaching the sweat glands. This requires several injections in the treated areas. To make the treatment as comfortable as possible, an anesthetic ointment is applied to the treated areas beforehand. Customers who are particularly sensitive to pain can be given a local anesthetic.

Hyperhidrosis: treatment options

There is no general answer as to which treatment option is preferable for hyperhidrosis, as both methods have advantages and disadvantages. However, those who do not wish to undergo surgery are well advised to use botulinum toxin treatment.

Botulinum toxin without animal testing

The botulinum toxin products we use are not tested on animals. In 2013, the manufacturing company Allergan received approval for the world’s first and only cell-based efficacy test (CBPA test) for botulinum toxin type A. This cell-based test was specially developed and eliminates the need for animal testing for the batch release of the botulinum toxin we use in Switzerland. This means that these are the only botulinum toxin products available in Europe for which animal tests are no longer carried out for batch release.

After the hyperhidrosis treatment

The results of hyperhidrosis treatment with botulinum toxin last between four and seven months. As it is a gentle treatment, no accompanying measures are necessary after the injections. In individual cases, botulinum toxin treatment has even permanently alleviated the heavy sweating – the sweat glands have to a certain extent “forgotten” how to produce sweat.

Risks & side effects

The treatment of excessive sweating with botulinum toxin offers a gentle, non-invasive alternative to sweat gland suction. While the surgical procedure of sweat gland suction promises lasting results, the treatment of excessive sweating with botulinum toxin is gentle, but also wears off after a few months, making new injections necessary. Botulinum toxin is completely broken down by the body, so there are no negative side effects to worry about. No undesirable effects are to be expected if the substance is used properly. No long-term side effects are known.
