Oxygen as a medicine? This is precisely the idea behind hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Originally used in diving medicine, this form of therapy has long since found its way into general medicine. It makes use of the positive effects of oxygen on the body and is suitable as support in the treatment of various illnesses and health problems. In this therapy, patients inhale medically pure oxygen under increased ambient pressure (“hyperbaric”).
In this way, oxygen uptake into the blood is increased and tissues with poor circulation are better supplied with oxygen. An increased oxygen supply is said to support the body’s ability to heal itself and the immune system, shorten the regeneration time and promote general well-being.
It has now been scientifically proven that hyperbaric oxygen therapy, when used over a period of 3 months, 3-5 times a week, has a positive effect on telomere length, whereby a massive anti-ageing effect can be achieved through cell rejuvenation
- Reduces local inflammation and oedema
- Fights infections by eliminating toxins and cell waste
- Reduces local hypoxia (oxygen deficiency at tissue level)
- Supplies the peripheral tissue with oxygen (“down to the last cell”)
- Improving the oxygen supply to injured structures
- Improves the circulatory system and heart function
- Activation of the stem cells
- Reactivates skin cells by stimulating blood circulation
- Activates and improves the lymphatic system
- Shorten recovery time after sports injuries
- Reduces muscle fatigue
- Improves the muscles and musculoskeletal system
- Reduces the formation of scar tissue
- Repairs cartilage damage
- Faster recovery of fractures and defective soft tissue and ligaments
- Accelerates the recovery process after an operation or long Covid
- Optimizes mental focus (eliminates the feeling of cognitive dysfunction and jet lag)
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a recognized treatment for decompression sickness
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (also known as hyperbaric oxygenation, or HBO for short) is a method of increasing oxygen uptake into the blood. The treatment takes place in a pressurized chamber in which the external pressure is 2.4 to 3 times higher. Breathing in oxygen under these conditions allows up to 7% oxygen to dissolve in the blood. As a result, more oxygen is supplied to the cells, which can eliminate a potential oxygen deficiency at cell level and improve the body’s ability to heal itself.
Treatment procedure
Before every treatment, we conduct a detailed personal consultation with every patient at our Clinic prevention-center in Zurich. We discuss your wishes and expectations and what treatment options are available. On the basis of this consultation, we draw up an individual treatment plan that includes all treatment steps.
For the treatment, you take a seat in the pressure chamber, in which the pressure is slowly increased. Once the desired pressure has been reached, you put on an oxygen mask through which you breathe in pure oxygen. Depending on the indication, this treatment can last 60 to 90 minutes. The oxygen supply is then regularly interrupted and you breathe in a normal air mixture. Towards the end of the treatment, the pressure in the chamber is slowly lowered again. As soon as the session is over, you can leave the treatment rooms again. You are immediately fit for social life again and can go about your daily routine.
Frequently asked questions about hyperbaric oxygen therapy
How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy work?
Due to the increased pressure in the treatment chamber, up to 20 times more oxygen can be released into the blood than under normal conditions. As a result, the oxygen can also reach tissue that was previously poorly supplied. There it can set biological processes in motion that support other treatment measures or increase general well-being.
Who is hyperbaric oxygen therapy suitable for?
The therapy is generally suitable for all patients whose symptoms are due to a lack of oxygen or where an increased oxygen supply could have a positive effect on the treatment. The prerequisite for this is that you do not suffer from any of the following illnesses that preclude the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Pneumothorax after lung surgery
- Chronic sinusitis
- Chronic infections of the upper respiratory tract
- Claustrophobia
Treatment is also excluded for patients with previous ear operations, an uncontrollably high body temperature and during pregnancy.
For which indications is hyperbaric oxygen therapy suitable?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used as a supportive measure for the following diseases:
- Decompression sickness
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Diseases of the inner ear (e.g. blast and noise trauma, acute sudden hearing loss, tinnitus)
- Wound healing disorders (e.g. burns or diabetic foot syndrome)
- Chronic inflammation
- Circulatory disorders
- Diseases that occur as late effects of radiotherapy (e.g. bone defects, cystitis)
- Anti aging – to lengthen the telomeres on the chromosomes (study results)
How long does hyperbaric oxygen therapy last?
A treatment lasts 60 minutes. Several treatment appointments are planned as part of the therapy.
What should you consider before and after hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
To ensure that you are suitable for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO), we take a medical history at our Clinic prevention-center in Zurich before each treatment to rule out any contraindications.
Note: Smoking reduces the positive effects of the treatment. You should therefore definitely stop smoking before the treatment.
No special follow-up care is required after hyperbaric oxygen therapy. However, as the therapy is generally used as a supportive or accompanying measure to other treatments, there is usually a follow-up treatment plan for these. The success of the treatment can be checked in regular check-ups.
What results can you expect after hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Most patients experience a noticeable effect after a few sessions. In some cases, the symptoms continue to improve even after the treatment has been completed. It is advisable to have a blood test carried out by Healthbiocare at the same time to determine the telomere length before and after treatment. Simultaneous treatment with the BlueZones preparations significantly increases revitalization. A healthy lifestyle is of course also required.
How many treatments with hyperbaric oxygen therapy are required?
We recommend that our patients at the Clinic prevention-center in Zurich undergo at least 10 treatments. These should take place at intervals of 2-3 days.
Are there any risks associated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
The changes in air pressure in the treatment chamber are comparable to those you experience when taking off in an airplane or during a dive. If you do not equalize this pressure, your hearing may be temporarily impaired. You should therefore always equalize the pressure in your ear during treatment.
Sensitive people may experience tingling in the limbs and a feeling of discomfort or restlessness during treatment. It is possible that a burning sensation may occur in the upper respiratory tract or under the breastbone. In these cases, treatment should be interrupted.
How much does hyperbaric oxygen therapy cost in Zurich?
In our Clinic prevention-center in Zurich, a treatment (60 minutes) of hyperbaric oxygen therapy costs CHF 170. 10 treatments (60 minutes each) are available as a subscription for CHF 1500, 20 treatments (60 minutes each) for CHF 2800 and 30 treatments (60 minutes each) for CHF 4000.
