Full and beautifully curved lips stand for femininity and sensuality. However, not all women’s lips have this natural shape. They want more volume or a more pronounced curve. Thanks to aesthetic medicine, it is possible to optimize the shape and fullness of the lips. One option for this is the so-called bullhorn lip lift, also known as bullhorn excision. This method allows lips that are rather flat and narrow due to genetic predisposition or age to be given a more aesthetically pleasing shape.

Frequently asked questions about the Bullhorn Lip-Lift
What is a bullhorn lip lift?
A bullhorn lip lift (also known as a bullhorn excision) is an innovative lip lift procedure in which a small amount of skin is excised below the nostrils. By fusing the remaining skin, the lips are tightened and the distance between the upper lip and nose is reduced. A length of 1-1.5 cm is considered optimal, but with increasing age the distance can increase up to 3-5 cm. The lip red appears larger and more prominent as a result of the tightening, but still looks very natural. The teeth are also more visible when smiling, giving the face a more open, sympathetic and attractive expression. The procedure takes its name from the shape of the excised skin, which is reminiscent of bull’s horns (“bullhorn”).
The lip lift is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the initial condition.
Who is the Bullhorn Lip-Lift suitable for?
The Bullhorn Lip-Lift is suitable for all women who feel that their lips are too long and narrow. This can be the case due to genetic predisposition or with increasing age. This is because the natural ageing process causes the lips to become narrower over time, which increases the distance between the mouth and nose and makes the face appear older. There is no age limit for a lip lift. You can benefit from this innovative procedure both at a young age and in old age.
You can find out whether a lip lift is a suitable method for you in a detailed consultation that we hold with our clients at the prevention center in Zurich before each treatment.
What should be considered after the treatment?
Immediately after the procedure, you should cool your upper lip to reduce swelling. You can leave the prevention-center in Zurich on the same day, a longer stay in the clinic is not necessary. Allow yourself 2-3 days to rest after the treatment and avoid physically strenuous activities. Also try to avoid excessive talking or intensive chewing during this period. After about a week, the stitches will be removed and you will be able to work and socialize again. There will be hardly any sign of the operation.
Are scars visible after a lip lift?
No, the sutures are very fine and are mostly located in the natural fold of the lateral nostrils and in the front area of the nostrils, where they are not visible. Thanks to the surgical skills and many years of experience of our doctors at the prevention center in Zurich, the scars are barely visible after the healing process.
What are the risks of a bullhorn lip lift?
If the procedure is performed by a competent and experienced doctor, as is the case at our prevention center in Zurich, the risks of this treatment are low. Very rarely – as with all surgical procedures – wound healing disorders can occur, but the risk of these can be further minimized by careful aftercare. After the procedure, slight swelling, redness or small bruises may occur in the area of the lips, but these usually subside on their own within a very short time. You can speed up this process by carefully cooling the treated areas. We will inform you in detail about all possible risks and side effects in a personal consultation before each treatment.
What is the difference between the Bullhorn lip lift and lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid?
With the Bullhorn Lip-Lift, a permanent result can be achieved that generally requires no follow-up treatment or refreshing. In contrast, the effect of hyaluronic acid injected into the lips disappears after a few months, as the body breaks down the substance over time. Regular refresher treatments with repeated injections are required for lasting results. However, this also means that the Bullhorn Lip-Lift cannot be reversed.
On the other hand, a more even lip shape can often be achieved with the bullhorn lip lift than by injecting hyaluronic acid. This is because this procedure actually gives the lips a new shape and not just a larger volume. The optical effect of larger lips is achieved by tightening the skin and stretching the upper lip.
Which method is better varies from client to client and must therefore be decided on an individual basis. We will be happy to advise you at our prevention center in Zurich on the various options and which procedure is best for you.
