Breast reduction in Zurich

Breast reduction surgery in Zurich (mammoplasty) can reduce the size and weight of heavy breasts, allowing you to lead a more active lifestyle again. Many women experience relief from chronic back, neck and shoulder pain after the operation. The main aim of breast reduction is functional improvement. The simultaneous breast lift also improves the aesthetics of the breast (also known as a
breast lift
).

Procedure for a breast reduction in Zurich

Breast reduction in Zurich begins with a personal consultation in our consultation rooms. During this consultation, the customer can describe her anatomy and the various breast reduction options are explained to her. The operation is discussed with the client in detail, the risks and limitations are explained and she is informed about the necessary form of anesthesia (twilight sleep).

The customer’s breasts are then photographed for documentation purposes (photos). A mammogram may be useful under certain circumstances.

The breast reduction itself takes place in our operating theaters at Utoschloss Zurich. A keyhole pattern is very often used for the skin incisions during reduction surgery. An incision is made around the areola. This incision is continued into the underbust crease. The excess skin – mammary gland tissue and fat – is removed and the nipple complex is then repositioned. The skin is then tightened from both sides under the areola, giving the breast a new, firmer shape. The final result of the breast reduction is an inverted T-shaped or vertical scar. For some clients, the horizontal incision in the area of the underbust crease can also be omitted. Whether such a “vertical mammaplasty” can be performed depends on the size of the breasts and the amount of tissue to be removed.

In the vast majority of cases, the nipples are left attached to their blood vessels. However, if the breasts are very large and hang downwards, the nipples may have to be temporarily detached from their connection to the breast and reimplanted at a higher point. This is usually associated with a prolonged loss of sensation in the nipple complex and a complete inability to breastfeed.

It may also be possible to
liposuction
may also be used for breast reduction in Zurich. This will be discussed depending on the individual findings.

Cost coverage for breast reduction surgery

If the customer suffers from some of the above-mentioned physical complaints due to her breast size, the health insurance company may be obliged to pay benefits. In Switzerland, health insurance companies require that 500 g per side can be removed and that the body weight does not exceed the BMI (Body Mass Index = body weight in kilograms divided by height in meters2) of 25 kg/m².

Further information on breast reduction in Zurich

A breast reduction in Zurich takes around two to four hours. The duration of the operation depends on the extent of the findings and the technique used. Most breast reductions can be performed on an outpatient basis. The client can be discharged from the clinic and picked up after a few hours. If a lot of tissue needs to be removed, the client will be monitored medically for a longer period of time after the operation. Breast reduction in Zurich is always performed under twilight sedation.

Although the wound area will be relatively large, the pain after a mastectomy is rather mild and can therefore be alleviated with little pain medication.

Immediately after breast reduction, it sometimes feels uncomfortable to get out of bed and walk. It can also feel uncomfortable when the breasts are moved. However, this will improve after a few days.

After breast reduction

After the breast reduction in Zurich, the breasts are bandaged with an adhesive bandage. A special bra must be worn to support the breast. Wound drains may be used to help drain wound fluid for a few days. The adhesive bandage will be changed after about a week. It must be worn for around six weeks to ensure optimal scar formation. The customer should wear a support bra permanently for several weeks until the swelling subsides and the breast heals from the inside.

Lighter physical activities can be resumed approximately two weeks after the breast reduction. Major physical activities such as sport should be avoided for at least six weeks. You may shower with the adhesive dressing after breast reduction surgery.

Some women report sudden onset of pain in the nipples and the sides of the breast (like pins and needles) during the first few months. This is usually re-inervation pain (i.e. the skin nerves grow back and the sensation improves).

As a rule, the physical ability to breastfeed is maintained, but every procedure carries a certain residual risk.

If the breast reduction in Zurich is performed on an outpatient basis, please note that your ability to react is temporarily impaired after twilight sleep or the use of a sedative, painkiller or anesthetic. You should therefore be collected after the procedure. On the day of the operation, you must not actively participate in road traffic, drive a motor vehicle or two-wheeler or work on dangerous machinery. In the first few days after the operation, you will need some additional help at home.

Breast reduction in Zurich leads to a tightening of the breasts, especially when excess loose skin or fat deposits are removed. Muscle tightening can support this effect, but the loss of elasticity is not completely eliminated, which means that sagging breasts can form again. Lateral differences, which exist in every person, can also cause slightly different scarring or skin wrinkles after breast reduction.

Other:

  • Consult your doctor if the dressing slips or if your state of health deteriorates!
  • Avoid sport or physical exertion for the first few days!
  • Only wash the breast area after removing the skin stitches!
  • You should clarify the timing of the suture removal with your doctor. After the dressing has been removed, you may notice discoloration due to bruising, swelling or a feeling of tightness. However, these usually subside on their own after the first few weeks and are therefore no cause for concern. Sensory disturbances or a feeling of tightness, on the other hand, can persist for several months until they subside.
  • Depending on the technique, you should avoid fast movements in the first few days to prevent postoperative bleeding.
  • Due to gravity, bruising becomes visible in the lower chest area (duration: 2-3 weeks).
  • The nipple area may feel numb for up to 4 months.
  • Scars are no longer noticeable after 2 months, except in young clients (duration: several months).
  • Sun or solarium should be avoided for 4 weeks.

Breast reduction: risks & side effects

Every operation involves certain risks, such as bleeding and infection. Serious complications are extremely rare in breast reduction surgery. Wound healing disorders are possible and occur more frequently in smokers and clients who are overweight. Circulatory disorders can occur at the nipple, which can lead to loss of pigmentation or scars. Only rarely do severe circulatory disorders of the breast or nipples occur, which are accompanied by tissue loss. Some clients may be left with a permanent loss of sensation in the breast or nipples.

  • Bleeding into the skin, muscles and fatty tissue, which usually requires no treatment.
  • Temporary irritation of the skin caused by disinfectants, drying out or touching, which usually subsides on its own.
  • Swelling of the connective tissue or the fatty body, which usually disappears with general decongestant measures. Accompanying treatment with medication may be necessary.
  • Bruising and post-operative bleeding (often still present several days after the operation) do not require treatment, but in extreme cases surgical hemostasis is necessary.
  • Softening of the wound edges under mechanical stress, e.g. when doing hair; this can have an unfavorable effect on scar formation and in very rare cases may even require scar correction. Reduced blood flow can also lead to so-called necrosis (tissue death), which can mean longer wound treatment or follow-up surgery.
  • In extremely rare exceptional cases, unwanted side effects such as allergic reactions or material intolerance to the anesthetic (swelling, itching, but also severe circulatory reactions up to shock), side effects in the central nervous system (restlessness, cramps, breathing disorders), rise or fall in blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia and slowing of the heartbeat can also occur as part of a local anesthetic or with the additional injection of a hemostatic drug during anesthesia.
  • Rare inflammatory reactions of the wounds, especially when sutures are embedded in muscles; this can prolong the duration of treatment.
  • Scars: The operation cannot be performed without leaving scars. However, the scars are placed in skin folds in such a way that they are as inconspicuous as possible and easy to conceal. The natural redness of a fresh suture disappears after 2-3 weeks, but can last for several months in individual cases. Small cysts of the skin can develop in the scar area, which are easy and simple to treat Disorders of scar formation: bulging, painful and itchy scars can develop (scar proliferation, keloid). These scar growths also usually disappear with conservative treatment, so that further operations are rarely necessary.
  • Severe scarring in the skin and muscles practically only occurs with years of nicotine abuse and severe bleeding without inflammation. Scarred distortions of the lower eyelid after such a complication often have to be improved by a repeat operation.
  • Overcorrection: Disorders can occur due to excessive removal of the skin or scarring after inflammation. The skin tension will improve on its own in the first few weeks after the procedure; surgical correction is only necessary if the problems persist.
  • This can lead to a cosmetically inadequate result, which can be corrected by another operation if necessary.
  • Bruising – some colleagues therefore leave a drain in place for the first few days. Tension in the face. This can be the reason for short-term hair loss in the suture area (e.g. after severe bruising). Normally there is no tension on the skin.
  • If smokers do not significantly or completely reduce their nicotine consumption, this can lead to wound healing disorders.
  • Pigmentation disorders of the skin, especially in the area of the nipple, which can also be permanent. Short-term or permanent sensory disturbances or loss of sensitivity in the breast or nipple area can also occur.

Breast reduction and breast cancer

Breast reduction reduces the risk of breast cancer as glandular tissue is removed during the operation. However, breast cancer can also occur in the remaining tissue. Regular check-ups are of course still necessary.

Frequently asked questions about breast reduction

General information on breast reduction

Who is a breast reduction suitable for?

Although large breasts can be seen as a symbol of femininity, they can also be a great burden for women. It is not only physically that excessively large breasts often lead to back pain or postural problems, they can also be a psychological burden if, for example, the woman feels reduced to her breasts or has difficulty choosing new clothes. Breast reduction is a suitable treatment method for women who are affected by their excessively large breasts.

How long should I wait after pregnancy before having a breast reduction?

If you are considering breast reduction surgery after pregnancy, you should wait until at least the end of breastfeeding, preferably 3 months after the end of breastfeeding.

How much can a breast be reduced in size?

As a rule, a breast can be reduced as much as desired. In the prevention center, we make sure that the treatment result is optimally adapted to the remaining proportions of the client. If a large amount of tissue is removed, it can be beneficial for the overall aesthetic result to also tighten the skin or even reposition the nipple in order to achieve a beautiful, well-formed breast.

Where do the scars run after a breast reduction?

The appearance of the scars after a breast reduction depends on the chosen treatment technique. We pay particular attention to scar-saving procedures so that there are no disturbing lines in the overall aesthetic result later on. In most cases, a fine incision is made around the areola, which is then continued vertically downwards towards the underbust crease. Although a thin line is initially visible, the scar will fade within the first 12 months with conscientious care, especially in younger clients. If a larger amount of tissue is to be removed, the vertical downward incision in the underbust crease can be continued horizontally in both directions. In the case of minimal changes, only one incision around the areola may be sufficient. We will be happy to discuss the exact incision with you personally at our prevention center in Zurich.

At what age can I have a breast reduction?

If the breast is fully grown, a breast can be reduced in size from the age of 16. However, the standard age for breast surgery is 18 years or older. However, attempts are initially made to help young women with compensatory measures, such as back training, so that the consequences of oversized breasts can be improved if necessary.

Does the feeling of the nipples remain after breast reduction?

In some cases, however, there may also be temporary hypersensitivity or numbness in the nipples. The sensitization of the nipples can best be finally assessed one year after breast reduction.

How long do the results of a breast reduction last?

How long the result of a breast reduction lasts depends on the initial size and the volume after the operation. The overall appearance can change slightly, especially due to pregnancy, major weight fluctuations or hormonal causes, but should generally remain permanent.

Breast reduction procedure

What do I need to consider before a breast reduction?

As a relatively large amount of tissue is removed during a breast reduction, the customer is dependent on adequate blood circulation and should therefore refrain from smoking for a few days before the operation. Women should also maintain a healthy diet, take sufficient exercise and undergo a gynecological examination prior to breast reduction. During the visit to the gynecologist, hormonal causes in particular should be ruled out as the basis for the oversized breast in order to prevent the breast from increasing in size again after a breast reduction.

Aftercare of a breast reduction

When is the final result of a breast reduction visible?

Immediately after breast reduction, the breast is already reduced in size. However, the breast may still be a little swollen at first and therefore appear slightly larger. In the following months after the breast reduction, however, the breast will swell on its own and you can enjoy your new breast. The primary end result is visible after about 3 months, and the scars heal after 1 year.

What do I need to consider after breast reduction?

The breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis in our clinic and the client is given a sports bra to support the result during the healing phase. We attach great importance to close monitoring and conscientious aftercare.

Many women still tend to push their shoulders forward and hunch their backs after breast reduction. Particularly after this operation, you should make a conscious effort to maintain a straight and healthy posture and get into the habit of doing so. For optimal wound care, you should take care not to touch the breast too tightly and protect it from external force.

You should also refrain from smoking after the breast reduction if possible. About six weeks after the breast reduction, scar care begins, for which we will of course be happy to give you tips. This also includes the tissue around the breast, which can be cared for with a gentle oil, for example, so that the entire upper body has a harmonious, aesthetic appearance.

When can I return to work after a breast reduction?

After breast reduction surgery, your ability to work will certainly be restricted for two weeks. As swelling can still occur during this time, for example, you should also take it easy physically during this period. As there is a medical indication behind these complaints, it is usually possible to obtain a sick note for this period.

When can I do sports again after breast reduction?

For the first three months after breast reduction, clients should completely avoid sporting activities. Afterwards, physiotherapy or osteopathic treatment may be useful, especially to stabilize the back, which suffered from the oversized breasts before the operation.

Financing

When does health insurance cover the costs of a breast reduction?

The health insurance company will cover the costs of breast reduction if the operation is medically necessary. This is particularly the case if the woman suffers from back or neck pain due to her large breasts, has postural problems or has sores in the underbust fold due to the large amount of friction. Many health insurance companies then specify the minimum amount that must be removed per breast in order for the costs to be covered. We will be happy to help you find out whether the costs will be covered in your personal case!
