A breast lift is requested by women who suffer from physical and aesthetic limitations caused by overly large or sagging breasts. This can occur particularly after breastfeeding or after pregnancies in general. Breast tissue can also sag due to genetic predisposition, leading to problems such as skin irritation. During a breast lift in Zurich, excess skin tissue is removed and the breasts are reshaped, lifted and reshaped to fit the body.

The breast lift
A breast lift or mastopexy can improve the size, shape and weight of the breast, enabling a more active lifestyle again. Many women experience relief from everyday discomfort after the operation. The main aim of this operation is aesthetic, but also functional improvement. The individual goals, course of the breast lift operation and risks of the procedure are discussed in a detailed consultation at our premises in Zurich.
Breast lift procedure in Zurich
A breast lift or mastopexy can improve the size, shape and weight of the breast, enabling a more active lifestyle again. Many women experience a relief of their complaints in everyday life after the operation. During the personal consultation, the customer can describe her complaints and is shown the various breast lift options. The operation is discussed in detail with the customer, the risks and limitations are explained and she is informed about the necessary form of anesthesia (twilight sleep). The client’s breasts are then photographed for documentation purposes (photos). A mammogram may also be necessary in rare cases.
The doctor chooses the treatment method taking into account the individual physical characteristics of the woman to be treated. As a rule, he removes the skin around the nipple. If incisions are made, they usually follow the natural contours of the breast and are largely invisible. In some cases, an additional horizontal incision is necessary next to the vertical one from the breast crease to the nipple. The doctor can then reshape the breast There are various common techniques for a breast lift in Zurich. The most commonly used method combines the reshaping of the sagging tissue with an upward displacement of the nipple. At the same time, the nipple can be reduced in size. (->

If an implant is used, the doctor places it either directly under the gland or underneath the chest muscles. Experience has shown that no additional incisions are necessary for this.
If necessary, the doctor will remove the excess glandular tissue in the lower parts of the breast before reshaping the breasts.
After the doctor has marked the areas to be tightened and the new position of the nipple on the breast, the surgical area is thoroughly disinfected and covered with a sterile drape. Once this has been done, the actual procedure takes place, which usually lasts between one and two and a half hours. To prevent swelling in the wound area, a special bandage – often in the form of a bra – is then applied.
Breast lift surgery takes about 3 to 5 hours and is performed in our operating rooms in the Utoschloss in Zurich. The duration of the operation depends on the extent of the findings and the technique used. It can be performed on an outpatient basis so that the client can be discharged from the clinic and picked up after an hour.
After the breast lift
The operation in Zurich leads to a tightening of the breast. The aim is to increase volume, particularly in the upper part. The durability is not clearly defined and depends on factors such as exercise and lifestyle. The aim is to tighten the tissue for 10 to 15 years with low risk under local anesthesia. Lateral differences, which exist in every person, can also cause slightly different scarring or skin wrinkles after the operation.
A special bra must be worn to support the breast. The customer must be picked up and driven home after the operation. You will also need some help at home for the first few days after the operation. The small plasters are removed by the doctor after approx. 14 days.
Some women report sudden onset of pain in the nipples and on the side of the breast (like pins and needles) during the first few months. This is usually re-inervation pain (i.e. the skin nerves grow back and the sensation improves). Breastfeeding is usually maintained with most surgical procedures, but there are no guarantees.
You can shower with an adhesive bandage.
Breast lift & breast cancer
A breast lift does not change the risk of breast cancer because no glandular tissue is removed during the operation. The normal examinations are of course still necessary.
Breast lift: risks & side effects
- Bleeding into the skin, muscles and fatty tissue, which usually requires no treatment.
- Temporary irritation of the skin caused by disinfectants, drying out or touching, which usually subsides on its own.
- Connective tissue or fatty bodies swell and usually disappear with general decongestant measures. Accompanying treatment with medication may be necessary.
- Bruising and postoperative bleeding may occur even several days after the operation, but usually do not require treatment; only in extreme exceptional cases is surgical hemostasis necessary.
- Mechanical stress (e.g. when doing hair) can cause the wound edges to soften; this can have a particularly unfavorable effect on scarring, so that scar correction may be necessary in individual cases. So-called necrosis (tissue death) can occur due to reduced blood flow. This could result in longer treatment of the wound or a follow-up operation.
- Undesirable side effects, such as material intolerance to the anaesthetic (itching, swelling, severe circulatory reactions up to shock), allergic reactions, rise or fall in blood pressure, side effects in the central nervous system (cramps, restlessness, breathing disorders), slowing of the heartbeat or cardiac arrhythmia can also occur during local anaesthesia or when a haemostatic drug is additionally administered during twilight sleep. However, this only occurs in extremely rare exceptional cases.
- Scars: The operation cannot be performed without leaving scars. However, the scars are placed in skin folds so that they are as inconspicuous as possible and easy to conceal. Small skin cysts can develop in the scar area, which are easy and simple to treat.
- Scarring is disturbed: painful, itchy and bulging scars may develop (scar proliferation, keloid). With conservative treatment, these scar growths usually disappear. A repeat operation is therefore only necessary in rare cases.
- Severe scarring of the skin and muscles only occurs in cases of years of nicotine abuse and severe bleeding without inflammation. Scarred distortions of the lower eyelid after such a complication often have to be improved by a repeat operation.
- Overcorrection: Excessive correction can lead to disorders. The skin tension will improve spontaneously in the first few weeks after the operation, but surgical correction will be necessary if the problems persist.
- This can lead to a cosmetically inadequate result, which can be corrected by another operation or may require the removal of the retaining ligaments.
- If smokers do not significantly or completely reduce their nicotine consumption, this can lead to wound healing disorders.
- Pigmentation disorders of the skin, which can also be permanent. Short-term or permanent sensory disturbances or loss of sensitivity in the breast or nipple area can also occur.
Mommy Makeover
For many women, a period of change begins after pregnancy. When they look in the mirror, they often feel restricted in their self-confidence. Pregnancy and breastfeeding have greatly changed a woman’s body. Mothers often complain about excess fat that has accumulated during pregnancy, sagging breasts and a less firm abdominal wall.
With a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, most women try to completely tighten their stomach after pregnancy, but unfortunately this is often not enough. At the prevention-center Zurich, we are happy to be there for you and respond sensitively to your desire to regain your body silhouette. With the so-called “Mommy Makeover”, Dr. Köhler can treat the affected areas of the body and, for example, tighten a sagging abdominal wall.
Depending on your personal initial situation, various procedures (e.g. tummy tuck, eyelid and breast lift) are combined in the “Mommy Makeover” to shorten the recovery time. The medical requirements are of course checked before the operations.

Frequently asked questions about breast lift
General information on breast lift
Who is a breast lift suitable for?
The breast changes with advancing age or due to external influences. One consequence can be sagging of the skin and tissue, which causes the breasts to droop. Many women feel uncomfortable with this appearance and want their breasts to be firm again. At our clinic in Zurich, we offer these customers a professional, lasting breast lift.
How long should I wait after pregnancy before having a breast lift?
The female breast also changes after pregnancy, which is why women should ideally wait until after weaning to have a breast lift.
Will a breast lift make the breasts smaller?
The volume of the breasts is not reduced during a breast lift. However, as the surface area of the breasts is reduced and they are repositioned upwards, the breasts may appear slightly smaller than before when viewed from the front. However, they appear well-proportioned, firm and voluminous again.
What scars occur during a breast lift?
There are several scarring options for breast lifts, depending on the extent of the operation. For the smallest form of breast lift, an incision around the nipple is sufficient. The nipple can be moved upwards by 1 – 2 cm. In the so-called “lollipop shape”, the incision around the nipple is extended by a vertical downward incision. The largest form of breast lift, in which additional skin tissue is removed from the lower breast area, requires a further incision in the underbust crease in addition to the incisions mentioned above. The scars resulting from this operation will be visible at first, but will then heal into fine, light lines. Experience has shown that the vertical scar, which women are most afraid of, heals best. Disturbing scars around the nipple can also be well concealed later on with permanent make-up, for example.
Is it problematic to get pregnant after a breast lift?
In principle, pregnancy after a breast lift is not a problem. However, women should be aware before undergoing a breast lift that there is a risk of not being able to breastfeed after the operation due to the scar around the nipple.
What are the risks of a breast lift?
The risks of a breast lift do not differ from the usual surgical risks. Following the treatment, redness or postoperative bleeding may occur. We protect our clients from infections with antibiotics for a few days. Naturally, scars occur during the operation, but slight asymmetries may also occur. As with natural breasts, the breasts will never look completely identical after a breast lift. Very rarely, there may be sensitivity disorders in the nipples. These can be temporary but very rarely permanent.
How long does the treatment result last?
How long the treatment results last after a breast lift depends on the extent of the treatment and the personal circumstances of the client. Our aim in Zurich is to achieve results that last an average of 10 – 15 years. Of course, this also depends on the age at which the operation was performed.
Procedure for a breast lift
What breast lift methods are available in Zurich?
The methods of breast lift are differentiated by the incision. In most cases, it is sufficient to make an incision from the nipple vertically down to the underbust crease. This can then be extended in the underbust crease depending on the extent of the treatment. If the nipple also needs to be repositioned, it can be moved by making an incision around the areola. As with every operation, we naturally ensure that the incision is particularly precise and thin in order to achieve the most inconspicuous scarring possible.
What do I need to consider before a breast lift in Zurich?
The most important factor before a breast lift is that the client is fully informed about the treatment and the resulting scars. She should be aware that it can take around a year for the scars to heal well and become barely visible. Smoking should be avoided at all costs before the operation. Nicotine increases the risk of side effects threefold.
Can a breast lift be combined with other operations?
If the breast is not only to be tightened but also enlarged or reduced, it makes sense to combine this in one operation.
How does a breast lift in Zurich work?
The breast lift in Zurich takes about 3 – 5 hours. Beforehand, it is important that the areas to be removed are well marked and the position marked. During the operation itself, the primary aim is to remove the excess skin, mobilize the fatty tissue and then reshape the breast internally. We use permanent sutures to fix the tissue and finally the skin mantle can be placed over the reshaped breast. Finally, the incisions are sutured without tension to achieve a beautiful scar pattern.
Aftercare for a breast lift
What do I need to consider after a breast lift?
Although a breast band is not usually necessary after a breast lift, a sports bra should be worn for six weeks. Above all, our customers should take it easy and pay attention to conscientious wound care. The breast is covered with plasters for the first two weeks, after which the wound should be kept dry. Scar care then begins six weeks after the operation.
When can I return to work?
When you can go back to work after your breast lift in Zurich will of course depend on your profession. If your job involves a lot of physical contact or heavy lifting, you should take about two weeks off. When you return to work after this time off, you should slowly increase your activity again. In principle, office work can be resumed after just one week.
When can I do sports again after the breast lift?
In general, you should take a three-month break from sport after the breast lift. Following this, a sports bra should be worn during exercise to support the breasts. A sports bra that supports the breast at the sides and from below and does not press heavily on the breast is ideal.
