Frequently asked questions about changing implants
When is an implant change necessary?
There are many reasons for an implant change. In most cases, women want to change their breast size or shape – for example after a change in weight, after pregnancy or because the breasts have changed with age. The desired changes can vary greatly: While some women prefer to have smaller implants again, others want a little more volume. Or they would like to optimize the shape and change from round to teardrop-shaped implants – or vice versa. In some cases, an implant change is medically necessary. For example, if an implant is damaged or capsular fibrosis has occurred.
What is capsular fibrosis?
Capsular fibrosis is the most common complication after breast augmentation with implants. This leads to tissue hardening and scarring – for reasons that are still medically unexplained – which can deform the breast and cause pain. In order to remedy these complications, it is sometimes necessary to remove the implant that caused them and the corresponding tissue changes and – if necessary – replace it with a new implant.
What happens if implants are not changed in time?
If an implant change is medically necessary due to complications or if the implant is damaged but not done in time, the breast may become deformed. There is also a risk that certain movements can only be performed with pain. With modern implants, a general replacement – unlike with older implants – is only necessary after 10-15 years instead of earlier.
How does an implant change in Zurich work?
Before changing implants, Dr. Köhler will conduct a comprehensive personal consultation with you at the prevention center in Zurich. This will cover the reasons why you are considering an implant change and your wishes and expectations. Dr. Köhler will discuss the options with you, explain the procedure and inform you about possible risks.
The breast implant change itself is performed at the prevention-center Zurich under general anesthesia. In order to avoid additional scars, Dr. Köhler uses the existing scar in the underbust fold from the original breast augmentation as access to the implant whenever possible. The existing implant is removed via this access. It is then usually necessary to create a new implant site based on the size and shape of the new implant. If the new implant is smaller than the previous one, a breast lift is often recommended to adjust the excess skin. After the procedure, you will need to wear a special bra for some time to support the healing process. It is also important that you follow the aftercare instructions to avoid complications.
What needs to be considered after breast implant replacement?
After changing a breast implant, the same recommendations apply as for the original breast augmentation: give yourself and your body a few days’ rest and avoid prolonged physical exertion for at least a week. Light occupational activities are usually possible again afterwards, but you should wait at least 4 weeks before engaging in heavy physical activity and sport. During this time, you should wear a special support bra to support the healing process. Please also follow all other aftercare recommendations that are part of your personal treatment plan.
Will an implant change result in new scars?
No, it is almost always possible to use the same approach to the implants as for the original breast augmentation. This means that the incision is made in the scar in the underbust fold so that no new scars are created when the implants are changed. Sometimes, however, it may be necessary to make additional incisions (for example, for a breast lift performed as part of the implant change), in which case new scars unfortunately cannot be completely avoided. You can find out more details in a personal consultation with Dr. Köhler before your treatment at the prevention center in Zurich.
What are the risks of changing implants?
Just as with breast augmentation, there are general surgical risks associated with any surgical procedure. This applies in particular to operations that are performed under general anesthesia (anesthesia risk). In the case of breast surgery, the specific risks include post-operative bleeding, wound healing disorders and infections, as well as capsular fibrosis. It is also theoretically possible that the nipples may become numb. However, with an experienced surgeon like Dr. Köhler from the prevention center in Zurich, the risk of complications is extremely low.
