Aim of breast augmentation with Prevention Center

Breast augmentation can achieve a reliable enlargement of the breasts. The aim is to create an aesthetic and natural shape. The prerequisite is a good position of the nipple. If the nipple is too low, a breast lift is usually required (your doctor will explain this to you if necessary). This will result in additional scars. For clients with breasts of different sizes, different implant sizes can be used. However, it can be difficult to achieve absolute symmetry, which does not occur in nature anyway. If the breast is only to be augmented, a small incision is made along the underside of the breast or along the areola.

Silicone & implant

A filled silicone shell is usually used for breast augmentation. The filling material is either saline solution or silicone gel. A further development of these implants (prostheses) consists of so-called “anatomical breast implants”. These have a higher projection in the lower area and therefore better imitate the natural breast shape. This can be particularly beneficial for very slim women. This was made possible by the development of a more highly cross-linked silicone (“high cohesive gel”), which is more dimensionally stable and yet practically as soft as the implants that have been in use for years. With these implants, the silicone can almost no longer leak out. The use of polyurethane-coated implants provides the highest level of comfort and safety.

Do implants have to be replaced after a few years?

There are no guidelines for changing implants. Today’s prostheses can be left in place for 10-15 years without any problems. If the customer has no complaints, regular check-ups are sufficient.

Which implants does the prevention center use?

We generally use silicone implants from Mentor (Johnson & Johnson).

Important note: Implants from other brands, e.g. Allergan*, B-Lite, Motiva, can also be used on request and for an additional charge.

*Pleasenote that to date there is not a single known case of ALCL lymphoma with smooth silicone implants.

Before breast surgery

In an individual consultation with us at the prevention-center Zurich, the customer has the opportunity to discuss the changes she would like to make to the appearance of her breasts. We will discuss the size and type of breast implant to be used, the type of incision, the position of the implant and whether it may be advisable to perform a breast lift in order to optimally correct the breast.

Questions about the customer’s health are also clarified, such as whether medication is being taken or whether there is/was a family history of breast cancer.

Breast augmentation procedure at the Prevention Center

During a breast augmentation, a skin incision is made, the breast tissue is lifted, a prosthetic pocket is formed and finally a breast implant is inserted. The breast implants can be placed either under the pectoral muscle or under the mammary gland above the pectoral muscle. The decision of where to position the implants depends on the shape of your breast, the type of implants and other considerations.

Types of anesthesia

In most cases, breast augmentation is performed under twilight sedation.

Duration

A breast augmentation in Zurich usually takes one to two hours. The duration depends on which technique is used and where the implants are inserted.

Outpatient or inpatient treatment?

Breast augmentation can be performed on an outpatient basis in our operating rooms at Utoschloss Zurich. The customer can usually go home after a few hours of rest.

Breast augmentation - the aftercare

The dressing is changed after about a week. It must be worn for six weeks to ensure optimal scar formation. The customer should also wear a support bra permanently for several weeks until the swelling subsides and the breast heals from the inside. Lighter physical activities can be resumed after just a few days. However, major physical activities such as sport should be avoided for six weeks. This helps the scar to heal.

Some women report sudden small stitches in the nipples and on the side of the breast during the first few months. This is usually re-innervation pain (i.e. the skin nerves grow back and the feeling improves afterwards).

Showering with the adhesive bandage is possible from the second day after the operation.

The ability to breastfeed is usually retained, but of course there is no guarantee. The scars will be red for a few weeks and then fade after a few months. The foreign body sensation will gradually disappear.

No-touch technology

We use the special no-touch method to ensure sterile, germ-free insertion of the implants. This means that the implants are only touched by the surgeon before insertion. This method is standard at the prevention-center Zurich and we have been strictly adhering to it for over seven years. Any risks are significantly reduced.

Risks & side effects of breast surgery

The following complications can occur with this operation, although they are rare: post-operative infection, post-operative bleeding with hematoma formation (bruising), loss of sensation in the nipple and breast skin and slippage of the implant. Capsular fibrosis: This occurs unpredictably when the natural scar around the implant (connective tissue “capsule”) contracts and the breast feels increasingly hard. This risk is lowest when using polyurethane-coated implants (according to scientific studies).

A loss of sensation in the breast or nipple usually improves within a few weeks or months, but can persist permanently (occurs very rarely).

Formation of skin folds: dependent on skin thickness, implant type and size. Particularly visible when the implant moves.

Please do not forget!

Ideally, nicotine consumption should be stopped 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after the operation (better wound healing).

Please avoid drugs with blood-thinning effects such as aspirin, ASA and Marcoumar, as well as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (your doctor will inform you).

Please arrange for someone to collect you after the operation and drive you home. Please inform us immediately if you notice fever, redness, sudden pain or other signs of infection or other problems after the treatment.

Hybrid breast augmentation in Zurich

To achieve a particularly natural result, we offer hybrid breast augmentation in Zurich. This method uses implants and injections of the patient’s own fat to create a particularly natural-looking breast volume. Hybrid breast augmentation is particularly preferred by slim women, as they usually have a small amount of their own breast tissue, which means that an implant quickly becomes visible. As only a small amount of autologous fat is required, this can usually be transferred without any problems even in petite women.

In order to enlarge the breast according to your wishes, our team of surgeons will first place the implants selected during the previous consultation. The breast implants are placed partially under the muscle via a small incision in the underbust crease. The size of the implant is determined according to individual circumstances in a personal consultation prior to the operation.

The patient’s own fat is then harvested from the desired area of the body (preferably the inner thigh or around 150 ml from the abdomen) and finally injected into the breast. The autologous fat coats the previously placed implant in such a way that any markings that may occur later are prevented. In addition, any missing volume between the implants can be filled.

The risks associated with a hybrid breast augmentation can be kept to a minimum thanks to the implants, which are generally smaller due to the additional injection of autologous fat. However, the possible occurrence of capsular fibrosis cannot be completely ruled out. It is also possible for the autologous fat to shift and wrinkles to form after the procedure.

Hybrid breast augmentation has significant advantages. On the one hand, our team of surgeons uses this method to achieve a particularly natural-looking breast that also feels that way. Secondly, with hybrid breast augmentation, small problem areas in other parts of the body can be treated by harvesting the patient’s own fat. The use of small amounts of fat also minimizes risks such as dents and maximizes the ingrowth of fat cells.

Breast augmentation & breast cancer

Many broad-based studies prove that breast cancer does not occur more frequently after breast augmentation with silicone implants, but – on the contrary – even slightly less frequently. Furthermore, no correlations between autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatism, lupus erythematosus or scleroderma) and silicone implants have been identified.

Frequently asked questions about breast augmentation

General information on breast augmentation

Who is breast augmentation suitable for?

Breast augmentation is suitable for women who feel uncomfortable with the natural size of their breasts and find them too small. This is often due to genetic factors or occurs after pregnancies or major weight fluctuations. Women who are also bothered by sagging breasts often opt for a combination of breast augmentation and breast lift.

Where does the scar run after breast augmentation?

The position of the scar depends on the chosen treatment method. During a consultation, we work with our clients to determine which method is most suitable depending on the desired size and individual circumstances. If larger breast implants are used, the scar usually runs in the underbust crease.

For the insertion of smaller breast implants, an incision can also be made around the areola. This is then located exactly in the transition from pigmented to non-pigmented skin and is therefore barely visible later on. Breast augmentation can also be performed via a small incision in the armpit. This leaves the breast completely scar-free and the incision is only visible later as a fine, thin line when the arms are raised. The incision in the armpit is not offered due to the generally higher risks. In any case, we make sure that the incision is clean and as inconspicuous as possible.

Do the breasts feel natural after breast augmentation?

Immediately after a breast augmentation in Zurich, the breasts may still feel a little firmer. This is because the breast is still slightly swollen and the skin first has to adapt to the newly gained volume. After a few weeks, the breast becomes increasingly softer and the breasts usually feel no different to the natural breast. The client herself can feel the implant naturally if she wants to.

How long should I wait after pregnancy before having a breast augmentation?

After pregnancy, it is advisable to wait until after breastfeeding to have a breast augmentation so that the breast can recover from the physical change. We would be happy to advise you personally in our clinic when the best time for your breast augmentation is!

At what age does breast augmentation make sense?

It is difficult to determine the optimal age for breast augmentation. Certainly, women undergoing breast augmentation should be of legal age. The main thing is that the woman receives detailed advice before the breast augmentation so that she feels confident to have the procedure carried out. Whether the breast is enlarged before or after pregnancy is also up to the customer. What is certain is that the breasts will change in the course of pregnancy. However, if the breast is enlarged at a very early stage, it is also subject to changes due to ageing factors and other influences.

How long should I wait before getting pregnant after breast augmentation?

In principle, there is no time limit on when women can become pregnant again after breast augmentation. However, we recommend that our customers wait for around two years so that the breasts can recover and you can enjoy the results for longer.

Can I still breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Regardless of the access route, it is 90% likely that the ability to breastfeed will be maintained after breast augmentation.

How does the sensitivity of the nipples change after breast augmentation?

How the sensitivity of the nipple changes after breast augmentation varies greatly. Both numbness and hypersensitization can occur. Surprisingly, the latter is even more common. The sensation of the nipple changes within the first three months and it may take some time before it returns to normal. In a few cases, numbness or hypersensitization remains permanent.

When can I make an appointment for breast augmentation in Zurich?

The appointment for the operation can either be made directly after the consultation, but you can also think about it at home first or get a second opinion. You are also welcome to make an appointment by email or telephone at our clinic.

How much time should you take to think about it?

Sufficient time for reflection is important, which is why you should definitely take this time, even if you have wanted a breast augmentation for a long time. During our consultation, we will give you comprehensive information about the procedure, which you are welcome to think about again at home. As soon as you feel really confident, you are welcome to contact us and make an appointment for your breast augmentation in Zurich.

Is the appointment for the consultation and operation binding?

The appointment you make for a consultation at our clinic is binding, as we will schedule the time for you and prepare ourselves accordingly. A provisional appointment will be made for the operation, which will then be confirmed by the specialist. After this firm confirmation, this appointment is also binding.

Can I have breast cancer screening despite breast implants?

The breast implants do not change anything when it comes to palpating and examining the breasts. In some cases, the breasts are even easier to palpate as the glandular tissue comes forward more. We generally recommend ultrasound or MRI for screening, as these diagnostics are less painful and therefore more comfortable.

Breast augmentation procedure

How does the consultation work and what is the best way to prepare?

In most cases, we are first contacted by our clients by email or WhatsApp. They make an appointment during our consultation hours and then come to our clinic in person. The first consultation at the prevention center takes place from woman to woman and we evaluate what the woman’s wishes are, what the requirements are, what pre-existing conditions there are, etc. The specialist then gives the customer all the information about the procedure and possible complications. They then work out together which implant in which position and size is suitable for the woman.

Most women find it helpful to write down questions in advance for the consultation, which they can then ask. You can also bring an independent person, such as your mother or a friend.

What options are there for breast augmentation in Zurich?

The two most common methods of breast augmentation surgery are breast augmentation with implants and breast augmentation with autologous fat. Worldwide, breast augmentation is most commonly performed using implants.

Where can the implant be placed?

There are various options for positioning the implant. On the one hand, the breast implant can be placed directly on the muscle, which is particularly suitable for women who already have their own breast tissue. This method is not recommended for women with little breast tissue, as the result often looks unnatural and the implant can become visible under the skin. On the other hand, the breast implant can be partially covered by the breast muscle or inserted completely under the muscle.

Why is drainage not necessary after breast augmentation?

At our prevention center, we do not use a drain. On the one hand, we want to spare our clients the pain, and on the other hand, we want to avoid the additional scarring associated with drainage. In the clinic, there is no benefit from using a drain, which is why we have never used one.

How long does a breast augmentation in Zurich take?

Breast augmentation in Zurich takes about an hour in the operating theater. The actual placement of the implants only takes about 25 minutes. This is followed by twilight sleep and the application of the bandage and bra. After the operation, the customer can wake up in peace and after about 2 hours she can leave the clinic again.

What type of anesthesia is used for breast augmentation?

In our clinic, twilight sleep is always performed by a specialist anaesthetist who can professionally monitor the anaesthetic. We have a team of anesthetists who, among other things, take care of pain management during treatment and are also available for our clients afterwards. We no longer use deep anesthesia, but work with twilight sleep instead.

Information on implants

What types of implants are there?

The implant shapes available to us today are the anatomical, teardrop-shaped implant on the one hand and the round implant on the other. The teardrop-shaped implant is often described as providing more natural-looking results. However, the right implant must always be determined according to the proportions of the client, which is why round implants also lead to natural results for many women. The surface of the implants can be either smooth or textured. We only use breast implants with a smooth surface. In addition, in most cases we use round implants as they are more flexible. Unlike teardrop-shaped implants, round implants do not rotate and this is not visible from the outside.

Why are there smooth and rough breast implants?

Historically, the difference between the implant surfaces can be traced back to the fact that there used to be only smooth implants. After the first breast augmentations, capsular fibrosis occurred in some cases, for which the surface of the implants was held responsible and rough implants were therefore developed.

Why are there round and teardrop-shaped breast implants?

Teardrop-shaped implants were developed in the past to achieve a natural result. The breast implants were therefore adapted to the natural basic shape of the breast. Round implants, on the other hand, were mainly used for the cleavage area. Nowadays, teardrop-shaped implants are mainly used if there are no breasts at all or if there are malformations. In most cases, we work with round breast implants and achieve natural-looking results.

How long do breast implants last?

The durability of implants is actually described as lifelong. However, this also depends on the age at which the implants are inserted. Women who undergo breast augmentation at a particularly early age should expect to have at least one implant change.

How safe are breast implants?

Breast implants have been in use for over 50 years and are extremely safe. The technology has developed positively over time. In connection with textured implants, studies have shown that lymphoma can occur very rarely. At our clinic, we only use smooth implants filled with a silicone gel. If the implant breaks – which is very difficult to achieve – this gel is absolutely harmless to the body.

Are saline implants still used?

Saline implants were popular in the USA for a very long time, as the silicone gel had not yet been sufficiently tested. The disadvantage of saline implants is that the solution leaks out completely if the implant breaks. Silicone implants have the advantage that they are softer and are not as cold in winter due to their thermal conductivity.

How sensitive are breast implants?

The foreign body sensation for the wearer of the implants should subside relatively soon after the operation. The breast implants themselves are filled with silicone gel and are therefore very soft, which is why the breasts also feel very soft on the outside after the healing phase.

How do I find the right implant size?

A completely normal effect after breast augmentation is that clients come to our clinic 4 weeks later and think that they should have chosen a size larger. This is due to the fact that you get used to the new size very quickly after the operation and the breasts no longer appear much larger to the woman herself. In order to determine the correct size before the operation, it may be advisable for the client to bring pictures to our clinic showing what she likes. It is then the doctor’s job to transfer this wish to the client’s body and adapt it to her individual circumstances.

Can rejection reactions occur?

A rejection reaction occurs insofar as the body forms a capsule around the inserted implant. However, this is completely harmless and quite normal. Although there is a foreign body in the breast, rejection reactions have never occurred in our prevention center.

What if the implants are too small for me?

Sometimes clients find that their implants are too small after a few months, as they have quickly become accustomed to the new size or it deviates from their expectations. Before an implant is replaced again, we recommend that you seek advice at our prevention center so that we can find a suitable solution for you together.

What can cause implants to break?

Implants today are extremely resistant due to their strong outer shell. When implants break, this is usually due to wear and tear over many years. Strong external forces, such as in a car accident, can also damage an implant. If we at the prevention center determine that our customer’s implant is damaged, we will of course recommend an implant replacement.

Do breast implants need to be replaced?

Breast implants can theoretically remain in the body for a lifetime. Statistically, however, implants should be replaced after 10 – 15 years.

What is capsular fibrosis?

In capsular fibrosis, bacteria cause a thickening of the tissue that has formed around the breast implant. This capsule can make the breast more compact and restrict its shape. If capsular fibrosis is suspected, we recommend that our clients undergo an examination at our clinic. If the findings are positive, the breast implant can then be replaced. It is also advisable to change the bearing of the breast implant. In other words, if the breast implant was previously positioned above the muscle, we can place it partially under the pectoral muscle.

What is ALCL?

ALCL is a specific type of lymphoma characterized by swelling and fluid accumulation around the implant. Several studies have established a link between this disease and certain implant surfaces. You should therefore always keep a close eye on your breast implants and contact your surgeon if you notice any strange symptoms, who will be happy to help you.

What is BII (Breast Implant Illness)?

BII (Breast Implant Illness), or ASIA (Autoimmune Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants), is a clinical picture that is associated with silicone breast implants. It is discussed extensively, particularly on social media. In addition to numbness and skin rashes, it can also cause palpitations, chronic fatigue, forgetfulness, joint pain, migraines, concentration problems and muscle weakness. However, no study has yet been able to prove a direct link between breast implants and Breast Implant Illness. The WHO has also not yet recognized BII as a disease.

However, removal of the implants is recommended for those affected, as is complete or partial removal of the capsule. However, this can lead to risks such as secondary bleeding or pneumothorax.

Can I fly with breast implants?

With breast implants, you can generally fly again immediately. However, you should not fly for too long during the healing phase, as this can be uncomfortable, and you should not carry your own luggage for the time being.

Can I dive with breast implants?

Diving is not a problem with breast implants. Only deep-sea diving can be difficult with breast implants due to the pressure conditions. However, you should wait three months after the operation before diving.

Aftercare for breast augmentation

When can I sleep on my side or stomach after a breast augmentation?

We recommend that our clients sleep on their backs for the first few nights after breast augmentation. In most cases, clients notice for themselves when it is comfortable to lie on their side again. We advise against lying on your stomach, especially in the first 3 months, so that the treatment result can stabilize first.

When can I shower after a breast augmentation?

At our clinic, we use a unique, waterproof dressing that allows clients to shower again on the first day after breast augmentation in Zurich.

Can I get stretch marks after the procedure?

Whether stretch marks occur after breast augmentation depends on the size of the implant chosen and the firmness of the skin. If the skin is very firm and a large implant is inserted, the skin will not stretch and tear. Your specialist will usually advise you of this before the operation. Sometimes there are already stretch marks on the breast before the operation. In this case, you should be aware that these may be more visible after the operation.

How long do I have to wear a special bra after breast augmentation?

The sports bra and breast band must be worn for four weeks after the operation. It is important to check the position regularly. The front part of the breast band should lie above the nipples and the back part below the bra. It should also not cut in or cause pain. The sports bra and band should be worn for 23 hours a day and the daily wearing time can be gradually reduced after 4 weeks.

When can I return to work after breast augmentation?

Most occupations can be resumed after about a week. Activities such as heavy lifting or carrying should be avoided for 4 weeks.

When can I do sports again after breast augmentation?

Exercise should be avoided for three months after breast augmentation. Sport can have a negative effect on wound healing, as blood circulation is also strongly stimulated during training for the lower body, for example.

When can I go back into the sun or solarium after breast augmentation?

After three months, women are allowed to expose themselves to the sun again. The same applies to visiting a solarium. An exception is made if the breasts are covered with a bra.

How long will the breast remain swollen after the operation?

The swelling after the operation disappears within a few days to four weeks, depending on the individual healing process.
